가장 그들다운 것에 대한 고민 스트레이(The Stray) 정규1집 [Divide] 지난 9월, 싱글 [Lucky night]을 공개하며 명징한 변화를 예고한 스트레이(The Stray)가 드디어 정규앨범 [Divide]를 발표한다. 데뷔작 ‘그대는 없는데’부터 싱글 [her]에 이르기까지. 스트레이는 모던락 기반에 R&B 보컬이 돋보이는 5인조 밴드체제의 음악을 선보여왔다. 이후 5인조에서 2인조의 멤버 재정비라는 파격적인 변화를 겪으며, 보컬 Leevi(이정환)과 드러머 hyo(최효석)의 색깔이 진하게 묻어난 새로운 아이덴티티를 정립한다. 앨범명 ‘Divide’는 스트레이가 선언하는 새로운 아이덴티티의 분기점을 의미한다. 멤버 변화를 겪으며 필연적으로 작용한 에너지는 음악의 장르와 비쥬얼 등 모든 면에서 새로운 도전을 이끌었다. 두 멤버들은 자신들이 몰두할 수 있는 음악의 '본질'에 대한 고민의 시간이 필요했고, 그 결과 여러 사운드가 촘촘히 쌓인 레이어와 같은 입체적인 사운드를 창출해냈다. 가요계에서 흔히 들을 수 있는 R&B 위에 스트레이만의 색채를 한 겹 덧입은 독자적인 음악이 탄생했다. 이 필연적 변화에 대해 그들은 스스로 Alternative R&B라고 칭한다. Future R&B 장르에 속하는 이 음악은 기존 R&B 스타일에 기반을 두며 현대적이고 독자적인 스타일을 갖춘 것이 특징이다. 이 장르 안에서 저마다 다른 방향을 지닌 열 개의 트랙이 채워졌다. 그 중 더블 타이틀곡 '짙어 (Feat. kriz)'와 'Lonely'는 스트레이가 나아갈 방향성을 짐작하게 한다. 여러 변화에 직조된 그 명징한 변화가 드디어 첫 정규앨범 [Divide]를 통해 선언된다. 이번 앨범은 한국콘텐츠진흥원의 ‘2016 우수 대중음악 제작 프로모션 지원사업’에 선정되어 제작되었다. <수록곡 설명 by 스트레이> 01. Lonely 더블 타이틀곡. 정규앨범의 선두에서 스트레이의 새로운 포문을 열어주며, 가장 스트레이다운 음악과 대중적인 음악의 중간 지점에서 중심을 잡아준다. 연인과 헤어졌을 때의 불안함, 우울함, 그리고 기다림에 대한 가사는 쌀쌀한 가을 공기를 청각으로 느낄 수 있게 한다. 02. 짙어 (Feat. Kriz) 더블 타이틀곡이자 이번 앨범에서 가장 핵심이 되는 곡. 연인간의 짙고 끈적한 관계는 영원할 수 없다는 운명론적 이야기를 마치 연인이 대화를 주고받는 듯하게 표현했다. 피처링으로 참여한 Kriz의 매혹적인 보컬은 노래 완성도의 마지막 한 조각을 채워주기에 충분하다. 03. bye bye 사랑도 상처도 무채색으로 흐리게 지워진다. 짙은 그루브가 강점인 보컬조차도 담백하게 힘을 뺀 ‘스트레이’표 발라드다. 04. PARADISE 연인과의 관계를 ‘천국’에 빗댄 곡. Future R&B의 기반으로 탄생했으며 Leevi의 보컬 역량을 한껏 느낄 수 있다. 05. 내 손을 잡아 hyo가 작곡했으며 위로를 필요로 하는 모든 이에게 바치는 곡이다. 연인 사이에 국한하지 않은 가사로, 각자 자신의 상황에 맞는 위안을 얻을 수 있다. 06. 뭔데 장난스럽고 발랄한 멜로디와 상반된 직설적인 가사가 돋보인다. 마음에 드는 상대와의 관계가 마음처럼 되지 않았던 기억을 되짚으며 들어주시길. 07. Lucky night (Feat. Reddy) Leevi의 경험이 녹아있는 곡으로, 이상형에게 다가가기 위해 용기내기 직전 망설이는 아슬아슬한 순간에 대한 회상이 담겨있다. 도입부와 후렴구에 매끄럽게 깔리는 피아노 루프와 다양한 퓨처 R&B 스타일의 세련된 편곡은 누구나 공감할 보편적인 사랑 이야기를 감각적으로 풀어냈다. 곡의 중반부가 지나고 전환되는 비트 위에 얹혀진 래퍼 Reddy의 그루비한 랩핑은 빼놓을 수 없는 곡의 주요 포인트다. 08. 길 건너편에 네가 슬프지만 사랑은 자주 흔들린다. 이성이 다른 사람과 바람이 났을 때, 그 장면을 길 건너편에서 마주한 상황을 표현한 곡. ‘너 없어도 아무렇지 않아’라는 가사는 분노에 가득 차 무심결에 뱉은 본심과는 다른 말이다. 09. 기다릴게 가사처럼 ‘너의 두 번째라도 좋다’고 할 만큼 절절한 마음이 극대화되는 곡. 그러나 상대의 마음은 바람조차 불지 않는다. ‘너, 너’를 통해 스트레이를 알게 된 팬들에게 추천. 10.
