Fly 07. 노래를 부르네 10년 묵은 슈가도넛 펑크, 장르와 역사의 기로에 서다 90년대 후반 소위 인디씬과 홍대앞 클럽씬은 불타는 에너지로 가득했다. 몇몇 밴드들이 방송과 공연활동을 통해 소위 매니아들을 위한 소수의 문화가 아닌 ‘대중문화’와 ‘대중음악’의 대안으로서 ‘인디음악’과 ‘밴드음악’이 조명받기 시작한 것이다. 이러한 중에 슈가도넛의 맴버들은 각기 다양한 밴드 활동을 거쳐 드라마틱한 데뷔를 하게 된다. 2001년으로 거슬로 올라가는 그들의 데뷔는 어느 페스티발에서부터 였다. 언더그라운드 밴드에게는 꿈의 무대이자, 엘범발매와 활동지원이라는 거대한 지원을 아끼지 않았던 쌈지사운드페스티발을 통해 데뷔한 그들은, 사실 지하의 스튜디오에 물이 새는 바람에 녹음이 늦어져 지원 마감 스케쥴을 지키지 못할 뻔 하였으나, 주최측의 배려와 그들의 끈기로 겨우 데뷔에 성공하게 되었고, 그 해 최고의 숨은고수(쌈지사운드페스티발의 신인밴드 선발대회)중 하나로 손꼽히게 된다. 2002년 월드컵시즌, 첫 앨범을 발매하고 인디밴드로서는 최고의 상승세와 왕도를 걸으며, 그 당시 최고의 주가를 올리고 있던 “이승환”과 함께 전국 5개 도시 투어를 하고, 2003년에는 일본의 후지락 페스티발에 참가 하는 등 그야말로 인디밴드로서 할 수 있는 모든 것들을 2~3년 사이에 이루어 내게 된다. 실로, ‘대중문화’와 ‘대중음악’의 대안으로서 슈가도넛의 음악이 가능성을 열어준 시기였던 것이다. 하지만 2000년대 중반에 이르러, 대안으로서의 ‘인디음악’이 10대들과 대형기획사들의 기획아이돌의 에너지와 연애기획물에 밀려 음악을 매개로 한 ‘시장’의 형성에 실패함으로서 데뷔초반의 활동내용과 성과를 뛰어넘는 새로운 활동영역의 확장에는 실패하게 된다. 중간중간 지속적인 앨범활동과 수많은 라이브를 진행하며 꾸준히 팬들을 확장해 갔지만, ‘대중음악’의 기로에서 그들의 활동 반경은 멈춰버리고 말았다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 10년 묵은 밴드의 펑크음악은, 여전히 경쾌한 사운드와 고민이 담긴 가사, 그리고 강력한 라이브의 에너지를 뿜어낸다. 흔히, 청자들과 매니아들 뿐 아니라, 많은 평론가들이 슈가도넛을 일컫는 말이 있다. “우리나라에서 몇 안되는 현명하게 나이든 밴드의 증거”라는. 10년의 공력을 갖고 레이블에서 독립하여 직접 이번앨범을 제작하는 그들에게 이번 앨범은 어떠한 존재인가? 10년이 넘는동안 대중음악과 대중문화의 새로운 희망이 ‘인디음악’과 ‘밴드음악’이라고 주창하고 있는, 글을 쓰고 있는 필자를 비롯한 수많은 자들이 갈망하는 “슈가도넛 로망스”의 끝은 무엇인가? 이번 앨범은, 단순히 밴드 슈가도넛의 고민이 아니라, 이 앨범을 사서 듣고, 혹은 이 글을 읽고 있는 우리 모두의 고민이 함께 담긴 징표이자, 반증이다. 이 고민에 대한 답은 차츰 고민해 보자. 음악을 들으며. 유쾌하게 나이든 밴드의 청량한 사운드 우리들의 밴드음악을, 모두의 대중음악으로. 끝이 없는 우리들의 party 불빛들이 가득 찬 이 거리 꿈을 잃고 노래하는 우리 -중략- 많은 웃음과 눈물이 뒤섞인 나의 뜨거운 노래는 커져가네 [수록곡 FRIDAY PARTY 중] 사운드적으로 보았을 때, 이번 앨범은 그간의 4장의 앨범들과 궤적을 같이 할 뿐만 아니라, 크게 달라진 점을 찾아보기는 힘들다. 여전히 청량한 그들의 곡들은 특유의 리듬감과 그루브를 잃지 않고 있다. 다만, 가사로 미루어 보건데, 멤버들은 이번 앨범을 통해 많은 고민들에 휩싸여 있는 것으로 보여진다. 10년간 수많은 경력과 최선을 다한 활동에도 불구하고 나아가야할 길과 음악의 지향점에 있어서 변화를 해야할지, 혹은 견고한 우리의 사운드를 강화해 나갈 것인지에 관한 고민을 하고 있는 것으로 보여진다. 하지만, 확실히 느껴지는 앨범 전체의 변화는, 2~3집의 어중간한 대중지향성에 비하여 이번 앨범이 들러주는 사운드가 오히려 2000년대 초반의 초기 슈가도넛의 사운드로 귀환한 것이 아닌가 하는 생각이 들게끔 하는 것이다. 곡 중간중간에 들어가 있는, 경쾌한 기타 프레이즈와 펑키한 드럼과 베이스의 리듬은 그들의 전매특허이자 라이브에서 관객들을 가장 열광시키는, 슈가도넛다운 사운드이다. 특히, 다소 고민이 담긴 우울한 가삿말에도 불구하고 귀에 쏙쏙 박히는 가사들은 여름시즌의 한껏 달아오른 밴드들의 라이브 이후에, 새로운 모습으로 변화된 그들의 라이브가 기대되는 이유이기도 하다. 그렇기 때문에, 실은 이번 앨범은 가장 특별한 것이 없으면서도 가장 슈가도넛다운 앨범이다. 7곡의 수록곡중에는 2곡의 어쿠스틱한 곡도 포함되어 있으며, 나머지 곡들은 역시나 힙합의 랩에서나 느낄 수 있는 라임의 운율을 느낄 수 있을만큼의 쫄깃한 가사전달과 사운드를 들려준다. 가장 변화하여야 할 시기에, 가장 그들다운 사운드로 돌아간 이번 앨범은, 그들이 다시 초심에서 혹은, 시작점에서 음악에 대한 즐거우면서도 진지한 고민을 거듭한 반증으로 보여진다. 그것이 이번 앨범을 가볍지 않게 보여지게 하는 징표이다. 인디밴드, 혹은 슈가도넛. 가장 우리다운 것으로 정면돌파 ! 락페스티발, 앨범발매, 홍대앞의 클럽공연, 대학페스티발, 각종 행사 등에서 가장 많은 이름을 올리고 있는 슈가도넛은 실은 현존하는 인디밴드중 가장 안정된 활동을 하고 있는 팀이자, 많은 매니아를 거느린 팀이기도 하다. 그들은 언제나 같은 고민을 해왔다. “가장 많은 사람들이 들을 수 있는 좋은 음악을 하는 것.” 이번 앨범의 가사 곳곳에 들어가 있는 반복되는 문구가 그것을 반증한다. 그들은 그저 “노래를 부르네”. 뮤지션과 작곡 작사가로서 30대 초반 ,10년간의 활동을 가름 짓는 이번 앨범에서 그들은 그들이 가장 잘하는 것을 하였다. 바로 가장 그들다운 사운드를 드러내고 작곡하고 노래를 부르는 것. 슈가도넛은 데뷔 이후 인디밴드들이 해낼 수 있는 많은 것을 이미 이루었다. 이제 그들이 할 수 있는 것은 시작점에 다시 서는 것이다. 무엇을 위한 시작인지는 그들 스스로가 찾아내야 한다. 우리는 응원한다. 무엇을? 그들을 통해 우리가 꿈꾸는 대중음악의 새로운 희망과 꿈을 볼 수 있기를. 시원한 바람에 우리는 눈을 뜨네 욕심에 익숙한 날들이 지나가고 우리의 마음속에 이 두눈 속에서 꿈꾸던 새롭고 아름다운 날이 다가오네 [수록곡 I’m Sorry 중] - 이승환 (groove.charllee@gmail.com / COMPANY F) - |
