Please Please 붕가붕가레코드 소형음반 No.12 우리는 원테이크로 간다. 치즈스테레오 [화성 로맨스] 소녀들을 울면서 춤추게 하는 ‘치즈스테레오’ 치즈스테레오는 춤추기 좋은 그루브를 곁들인 간결 명료한 로큰롤 사운드를 갖고 있는 3인조 밴드다. 천부적인 거짓말 솜씨를 자랑하는 ‘내츄럴 본 거짓말쟁이’ 이동훈(v/g), 스타일이 워낙 좋아 실내에서도 선글라스를 벗지 않는 ‘최글라스’ 최영휴(b), 그리고 자기 여자에게만 따뜻한 ‘수도권남자’ 하승우(dr)로 구성되어 있다. 2006년 “근육을 키우자”는 취지로 떠난 MT에서 술과 고기를 즐기던 중 우연하게 득도, 특유의 댄서블 로큰롤 사운드를 얻은 것을 계기로 본격적으로 각지의 댄스플로어를 공략하기 시작했다. 이후 몇 년 간 그들은 어지러이 돌아가는 오색 조명 밑에서 맛깔 나는 리듬으로 천부적인 몸치라 자부해왔던 이들에게 마저 거부할 수 없는 율동의 충동을 선사해 왔다. 그러던 중 충동이 과했던 나머지 그들을 따라 다니던 일군의 소녀들이 춤을 추면서 심지어 눈물까지 흘리게 되었고 이러한 현상이 사회적 파장을 일으킬 지경에 이르렀다. 이러한 광경을 목도한 인디 레이블 붕가붕가레코드는 이러한 파장을 전국적으로 확산시키고 싶었던 바, 얼른 이들과 접촉, 합심, 계약했다. 그 결과물이 첫 싱글 음반인 《Oh Yeah》(2008)와 첫 정규 음반 《Don’t Work Be Happy》(2009). 음반 발매 후 그들은 2008년 12월 ‘EBS 스페이스 공감 이달의 헬로루키’에 선정되는 등 맹렬하게 활동을 하면서 전국 각지의 소녀들을 차근차근 울려 가고 있다. 이를 바탕으로 밴드는 UK 차트 1위를 목표로 하고 있으나 현재는 언어의 장벽에 부딪혀 힘들어 하고 있다. * 치즈스테레오 공식 커뮤니티 : club.cyworld.com/cheezstereo 원테이크로 채워진 충만한 에너지, 《화성 로맨스》 이번 음반의 핵심은 역시 원테이크로 녹음했다는 점이다. 일단 드럼 먼저 녹음 해 놓고 그걸 나중에 들으면서 기타와 베이스를 따로 따로 녹음하고서는 틀린 부분은 나중에 수정하고, 일반적으로 현대의 녹음이라는 것은 이런 방식으로 이뤄지는데, 그렇게 끊어 치는 일 없이 모두 한 데 모여 한방에 갔다는 것이다. 이 음반에 들어가 있는 기타와 베이스, 드럼 소리는 모두 그런 방식으로 녹음된 것이다. 안다. 원테이크 녹음이라는 게 뮤지션으로서 거의 만렙을 찍을 지경에 이르러서야 해 볼 엄두를 내는 어려운 방식이라는 것을. 애초에 그런 우려를 하지 않았던 것은 아니다. 원테이크로 가자는 제안이 나왔을 때 관계자들은 아직 1집 밖에 못 낸 풋내기 밴드가 섣불리 도전할 방법이 아니지 않냐는 걱정도 했다. 하지만 그래도 하기로 했다. 3인조의 단촐한 구성에서 나오는 에너지를 극대화시키기에는 이만한 방법이 없다는 결론이었다. 그리하여 결과물은? 굳. 확실하게 느낄 수 있는 건 충만한 에너지다. 거의 10년에 가까운 시간 동안 겪어 온 수 많은 무대에서 맞춰 온 그들의 호흡이 음반을 통해서 그대로 느껴진다. 타이틀곡 ‘화성 로맨스’에서 느껴지는 그루브는 춤추기 좋았던 그들의 노래들 중에서도 사상 최고다. 덧붙여 화성의 하늘이 푸르다는 사실을 믿어달라며 얼토당토 않는 고백을 해대는 가사에서 느껴지는 위트는 역시 ‘내츄럴 본 거짓말쟁이’라는 보컬 이동훈답다고 느껴진다. 원테이크 녹 그들 본연의 모습을 극대화한 것이라면, 이번 음반에서 주목해야 할 또 다른 요소는 노래쓰기에서 느껴지는 방향의 전환이다. 지금까지의 치즈스테레오 노래들이 대부분 ‘두 줄을 넘지 않는 가사. 단순하고 댄서블한 기타 멜로디,’ 이런 식으로 간결함을 극대화시켰다면, 이번 음반의 ‘청춘파도’와 ‘Please Please’는 차분한 느낌으로 섬세한 감정 표현을 위주로 접근했다. 요컨대 발라드 같은 노래를 썼다는 것인데, 아무래도 춤추게 하는 것만으로는 돈을 만지기 힘들고 역시 한국에서는 발라드, 이런 식의 발상이 개입한 것 같기도 하다. 생각대로 잘 될 지는 모르겠지만, 일단 그들의 변모가 만들어낸 노래들이 꽤 괜찮다는 점을 감안해봤을 때는 환영할만한 일이다. “인생은 한방이지. 녹음도 한 방이야. 충분히 즐기면서 했다고 생각해.” ? 리더/프로듀서 이동훈 구매자들한테 한 마디 해달라는데 일단 반말로 나오는 게 역시 록스타답다는 생각이 든다. 록스타로 가는 길 중 하나라는 원테이크 녹음도 성공적으로 해냈다. 다만 완전히 원테이크는 아닌 것이 보컬은 따로 했다. 들을만한 걸 만들어내려면 어쩔 수 없는 부분이다. 리더인 이동훈이 프로듀서를 맡았고, ‘장기하와 얼굴들’ ‘불나방 스타 쏘세지 클럽’ 등의 음반에 참여한 붕가붕가레코드의 테크니컬 디렉터 나잠 수가 공동프로듀서이자 엔지니어로 이름을 올렸다. 앨범 표지에 사용된 아트워크는 gong, 디자인은 조형석이 했다. 아. 그리고 덧붙여서. 이 CD에는 타이틀곡 ‘화성로맨스’의 뮤직비디오가 수록이 되어 있다. 컴퓨터에 넣으면 볼 수 있다고 한다. 글쓴이 / 곰사장 (붕가붕가레코드) * 붕가붕가레코드 홈페이지 : www.bgbg.co.kr |
