Maryland 90년대 후반 미국 TV 로맨틱 시리즈를 대표했던 드라마 ‘앨리 맥빌’그 시리즈에 흘렀던 주옥 같은 배경 음악들의 핵심을 담아낸 사운드트랙 90년대를 대표한 인기 TV시리즈「Ally McBeal」에 대하여 1997년부터 2002년까지 총 5개 시즌으로 방영된 미국 폭스TV(Fox TV)에서 방영된 드라마 시리즈 ‘앨리 맥빌(Ally McBeal)’은 매 시즌마다 본국에서만 1천만 명 내외의 시청자들을 TV 앞으로 끌어 모았고, 골든 글로브(Golden Globe) 시상식에서 2000년부터 2002년까지 최우수 코미디/뮤지컬 TV시리즈 상을 수상했던 히트작이었다. 무엇보다 이 드라마를 보는 시간을 즐겁게 만드는 또 하나의 매력은 바로 중간 중간 꾸준히 흐르는 ‘음악’들이다. 놀랍게도 이 시리즈에 흐르는 음악의 거의 대부분을 직접 노래한 뮤지션은 단 한 명, 본다 쉐퍼드(Vonda Shepard)였다. 프로듀서 데이빗 켈리는 일찍이 그녀의 노래에 반해서 이 시리즈의 음악을 담당하게 했는데, 그와 동시에 주인공들이 근무하는 사무실 지하의 바에서 매일 밤 피아노를 치며 노래하는 여성 뮤지션 역할을 배정하면서 대부분의 에피소드에 계속 등장하게 만들었다. 결국 그녀의 노래들로 인해 이 드라마의 인기도는 더욱 상승할 수 있었고, 90년대 중반까지도 별로 높은 지명도를 얻지 못했었던 본다 쉐퍼드에게도 ‘앨리 맥빌’의 음악 참여는 스타덤으로 가는 지름길이 되었기에, 지금 되돌아보면 서로에게 득이 되었던 결합이라고 평가할 수 있을 것이다. 앨리 맥빌 OST 시리즈의 핵심 트랙들의 다이제스트 「The Best of Ally McBeal」 지금까지 ‘앨리 맥빌’에 삽입된 음악들이 담겨진 사운드트랙은 앞서 언급한 「Songs From Ally McBeal」과 「Heart And Soul: New Songs From Ally McBeal」외에도 2장이 더 발매되었다. 먼저 시즌 4와 5 사이의 공백기에 발매된 3번째 사운드트랙「Ally McBeal: For Once in My Life」(2001)이 있고, 그 외 스페셜 앨범으로 시리즈에 등장하는 여러 배우들의 목소리로 부른 캐롤 모음집인 「Ally McBeal: A Very Ally Christmas 」(2000)가 있다. 이제 미국에서 종영된 지 7주년을 맞는 시점에서 새롭게 발매되는 이 컴필레이션은 캐롤 앨범을 제외한 3장의 OST 중에서 가장 음악 팬들과 시리즈의 애청자들이 좋아했던 본다 쉐퍼드의 노래들만을 엄선해 수록하고 있다. 먼저 첫 번째 OST에서는 8곡이 선정되었는데, 이 시리즈의 메인타이틀 테마인 경쾌한 컨트리 록 취향의 어덜트 팝 트랙 ‘Searchin' My Soul’이 앨범의 포문을 열고 있다. 원래 그녀의 솔로 2집에 이미 담겼던 곡이었지만, 데이빗이 그녀를 이 시리즈의 음악 담당을 맡기게 된 결정적 트랙이 되었고, 주인공인 앨리의 인생의 목표를 상징하는 의미도 담고 있다. 그 밖에 앨리의 첫사랑인 빌리와의 추억을 회고하는 장면마다 흘렀던 피아노 중심의 발라드 ‘Maryland’(이 곡도 그녀의 솔로 3집에 이미 담겼었다), 서로 이뤄질 수 없음을 알면서 함께 사무실에서 춤을 추던 앨리와 빌리의 로맨스 씬에 흘렀던 슬프고도 아름다운 발라드인 (1952년 수 톰슨(Sue Thompson)의 곡을 커버한) ‘You Belong To Me’, 사랑과 결혼을 간절히 바라는 앨리의 심리가 반영된 환영으로 등장하는 ‘댄싱 베이비(Dancing Baby)’가 춤출 때 등장했던 비제이 토마스(B.J. Thomas)의 커버 ‘Hooked On a Feeling’, 우리에겐 90년대 세어(Cher)가 주연한 영화 ‘Mermaids’ OST 속 버전으로 친숙한 ‘It's In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)’, 역시 여러 뮤지션들의 커버 버전으로 익숙한 더스티 스프링필드(Dusty Springfield)의 히트곡 ‘I Only Want To Be With You’ 등이 본다의 끈끈하면서도 매력적인 보이스로 인해 원작과 다른 색다른 생명력을 얻고 있다. 한편, 두 번째 OST에서는 인디고 걸즈(Indigo Girls)의 에이미 세일러스(Amy Sailers)와 함께 듀엣으로 노래한 포크-컨트리 발라드인 ‘Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow’와 상당히 충격적(?) 에피소드에 속했던 시즌 3의 첫 회에서 처음 소개된 ‘Sweet Inspiration’이 선곡되었으며, 세 번째 OST에서는 시즌 4에서 앨리와 로맨스를 펼쳤던 로버트 다우니 주니어(Robert Downey Jr.)가 본다와 함께 듀엣을 한 ‘Chances Are’와 ‘Home Again’이 선곡되었다. 그리고 기존 OST를 모두 구입해놓았을 매니아들을 위해 본다의 보컬로 듣는 신곡 2곡이 새로 수록되었는데, 경쾌한 가스펠 타입 소울 트랙 ‘Something About You’와 블루스적 감성이 담긴 팝 발라드 ‘I Know Better’에서 그녀만의 보이스의 매력이 여전히 유효함을 확인할 수 있다. 예전에 국내에 각 사운드트랙이 소개되긴 했지만, 절판되어 이 시리즈의 OST를 구하기 힘들었던 ‘앨리 맥빌’ 매니아들과 이제 케이블 TV를 통해 이 시리즈를 뒤늦게 보게 된 미드 매니아들에게 이번 컴필레이션은 드라마의 감흥을 음악으로 지속시킬 수 있는 매개로서, 그리고 본다 쉐퍼드라는 훌륭한 뮤지션의 목소리와 음악세계를 느낄 수 있는 작품으로서 그 역할을 충실히 해 줄 것이다. |
