01 마중 02 알 길이 없네요 03 꼭 그래야만 했을까 04 구해줘 05 안녕 Je'she(제쉬)가 당신에게 건네는 첫 마디. “잠깐만 기다려요, 내가 <마중> 나갈게.” 안녕? 만나서 반가워요. 이렇게 당신을 마중 나갈 수 있게 돼서 얼마나 다행인지 몰라. 어디서 오셨나요? 우리 서로 할 말이 많을 것 같은데, 일단 여기 좀 앉아 봐요. 차 한 잔 내올게요. 관계와 소통의 시작은 대화. 말뿐만이 아니라 말투와 목소리, 향하는 시선, 맞닿는 눈빛, 미묘한 표정변화, 손, 사소한 버릇, 주변을 떠도는 공기, 들이마시고 내쉬는 숨결 하나조차 단서가 되고 대화의 소재가 되어 관계가 익어간다. 제쉬가 주목한 것은 그 ‘관계’라는 것이 사랑에만 국한된 것이 절대 아니며, 생각보다 타인과 ‘소통’을 하기란 어렵다는 것, 마주 대하여 이야기를 주고받는 ‘대화’라는 걸 할 때, 실상 주고받는 것보다는 주는 것에만 집중해 살면서 제대로 된 대화를 나눌 기회는 그리 많지 않다는 것이었다. 사람은 혼자 왔다가 혼자 간다. 이치다. 그러니 외로운 것이 당연하다. 때문에 어딘가에 기대고 싶을 수밖에, 기대어 살 수밖에 없다. 하지만 늘 그 기댈 곳이란 것은 변변찮기만 하고, 기댈 수 있는 순간이 찾아와도 찰나에 지나지 않는다. 그럴 때 들을 노래 하나 없다면 그보다 더 외롭게 느껴지는 순간이 있을까? 위로의 말로도 위로가 되지 않는 때, 혼자 있고 싶지만 아이러니하게도 누군가의 품이 절실할 때, 울고 싶지만 울고 싶지 않을 때, 전화기를 들어 무슨 얘기라도 하고 싶은데 선뜻 전화할 곳이 없을 때, 혼자 있을 때, 그럴 때, 듣고 싶은 노래 하나 없다니- 어딜 가든 노래가 범람하는 시대가 되었는데, 내 마음 하나 달랠 노래가 없다는 사실에 혀를 내두른 적이 한 두 번이 아니다. Je'she(제쉬)는 불어의 Je(나)와 영어의 she(그녀)를 합성한 팀명으로, “나와 그녀, 나와 불특정다수, 나아가 나와 당신의 이야기를 노래하고 싶다"는 바람을 담고 있다. 제쉬는 직접적인 위로 없이 위로가 되는, 사랑이 다가 아닌, 말이 많지 않아도 소통할 수 있는, 잠 못 들어 허덕이는 새벽을 연명할 관심 세 스푼과 애정 200g, 물 한 컵 정도의 당장의 공복을 채워줄만한 앨범 한 장을 만들어 당신에게 내밀고자 한다. Je'she(제쉬)의 음악은 보컬 이제이(EJ)가 쓰는 가사를 건반 이승희가 그리는 것으로부터 시작된다. 이제이는 어떻게 하면 내 이야기이되 내 이야기가 아닌 글을 쓸 수 있을지 고민을 거듭하고, 이승희는 가사에 잘 달라붙는, 중저음이 매력적인 보컬의 음색을 가장 잘 드러내줄 멜로디를 그리는 일에 집중한다. 그 단계가 지나면 둘이 함께 머리를 맞대고 제쉬만의 색깔을 입힌다. 나에게도 좋지만 남들에게도 좋을 수 있게, 내가 부르고 연주하지만 듣는 이의 몫이 충분히 남을 수 있도록 편곡하는 것이다. 제쉬의 음악은 단순해보이지만 견고하다. 예쁘지도 친절하지도 않지만 솔직하다. 그리고 보컬 이제이(EJ)의 음색은 기존의 인디 여자보컬과는 분명하고 뚜렷한 차별성을 지니고 있다. 깊고 세련된 울림이 무심코 귀를 기울이게, 어느새 발걸음을 멈춰 세우게 만든다. 중저음이 많지만 맑고, 기교는 많지 않지만 곡의 특성에 알맞게 변한다. 또 덤덤하지만 치밀하고 예민하지만 무심하게 노래를 부른다. 그녀가 쓰는 가사도 마찬가지다. 그 보컬적인 특성과 가사를 최대한으로 끌어올려 시너지효과를 주는 것이 바로 이승희의 건반이다. 장르에 구애받지 않고 이제이(EJ)에게 최적화된 곡을 쓴다. 그녀는 화려하지 않지만 뚜렷한 존재감을 지닌 피아니스트이자 작곡가다. 보컬의 뒤에서, 옆에서 제 역할을 톡톡히 해내고, 나서야할 때는 확실히 나서서 이제이(EJ)와 함께 노를 저어나간다. 이번 EP <마중>은 그런 둘의 궁합의 극치만을 모아 선보이는 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 제쉬의 첫 EP앨범 <마중>은 어쿠스틱을 기반으로 하고 있지만 팝, 발라드, 왈츠, Rock 등이 다양하게 녹아있다. 1번 트랙 [마중]을 제외하고는 대부분이 어쿠스틱 피아노와 어쿠스틱 기타, 카혼, 그리고 약간의 심벌만으로 구성되어 있는데, 기존의 어쿠스틱 곡들과 비교해 베이스나 드럼 없이도 꽉 찬 사운드를 내보인 대담한 시도가 주목할 만하다. 특히 앨범의 3, 4번 트랙인 [꼭 그래야만 했을까]와 [구해줘]같은 Rock적인 곡들은 어쿠스틱 악기로도 충분히 파워풀하고 긴장감이 있게, 풍성한 사운드를 구현해낸 점이 인상적이다. 이들은 그 가치를 인정받아 2013년 5월 ‘K-Rookies 올해의 루키’에 선발되었다.
