다 덜어내고 남은 노래들 '생각의 여름'
'생각의 여름'은 노래를 부르고 기타를 치는 박종현이 홀로 끌어가고 있는 프로젝트다. '생각의 여름'이라는 이름은 '생각의 봄'을 지칭하는 사춘기(思春期)의 다음 시기를 가리킨다. 더불어 그가 해 온 생각과 만들고 불러 온 노래들을 정리한다는 의미를 담고 있기도 하다.

농담을 반쯤 섞어 그를 ‘포크의 근본주의자’라 부른다. 그의 음악적 지향이 품고 있는 단호한 ‘최소주의(minimalism)’ 때문이다. 그의 노래들은 1절-후렴-2절-후렴… 같은 식으로 반복하는 전형적인 대중음악의 구성에서 벗어나 있다. 이러한 반복이 쓸 데 없는 것이라 생각하기 때문이다. 다른 악기를 완전히 배제한 채 오로지 통기타와 목소리만으로 이뤄진 편성을 고집하는 것 역시 비슷한 맥락이다. 다소 결벽이라고 느껴질 정도이기도 하지만, 덕분에 그의 노래에 담긴 언어는 철저하게 정제되어 있고 선율 역시 감각적인 상태로 최적화되어 있다. 때문에 이렇게 비타협적임에도 그의 노래는 불편하지 않고 오히려 의외로 감각적이다. 그리고 그의 간결함은 듣는 이에게 집중을 강요하지만 그와 동시에 생각의 여백을 선사하여 의미 있는 경험을 하게 한다.

2005년 '치기 프로젝트'라는 이름으로 붕가붕가레코드가 발매한 첫 번째 음반인 '관악청년포크협의회'의 일원으로 참여하면서 데뷔했다. 그리고 2009년에는 '생각의 여름'이라는 이름으로 셀프 타이틀 1집을 발매했다. 이후 몇 년 간 간간이 공연을 한 것을 제외하고는 아무런 음악 활동을 하지 않던 그는 2012년 5월 디지털 싱글 ‘안녕’의 갑작스러운 발표와 함께 활동을 재개, 곧 이어 정규 2집 ‘곶’을 발매하게 되었다.

생각의 여름의 작업을 특징짓는 주요한 테마 중 하나는 시간의 흐름이다. 애초에 프로젝트 이름에 특정한 시기를 의미하는 ‘여름’이라는 단어를 포함하고 있는 것부터 그렇다. 3년 전에 나왔던 1집 ‘생각의 여름’ 역시 꾸준하게 노래를 만들어왔던 이전 몇 년 동안의 경험과 변화를 정리한다는 의도를 품고 있었다. 그래서 1집은 여름에서 겨울로 바뀌는 시간의 흐름 동안 스스로의 변화를 자각하는 것으로 시작하여 아홉 개의 노래를 경유한 후 앞으로 맞이할 다섯 번의 여름에 대한 예감으로 끝을 맺었다. 그리고 그 시점의 그는 좀 더 짙은 색깔을 갖게 될 것이라는 기대와 결국 창백해져서 흐려져 버릴지도 모른다는 염려를 동시에 품고 있었다.

그 후로 두 번의 여름이 지나고 세 번째로 맞이한 여름의 한복판. 예정했던 다섯 여름의 절반의 지났고, 그 사이 예감은 염려가 아닌 기대로 실현되었다. 그렇게 한층 더 짙어진 여름, 그 결과물이 생각의 여름 2집 ‘곶’이다.

이 앨범에서도 주요한 테마는 1집과 마찬가지로 시간의 흐름에 따른 심리적 변화의 기록, 하지만 거기서 더 나아가 2집의 모든 노래들은 내면 풍경의 서사라 할 수 있는 형태로 긴밀하게 연결되었다. 심리적으로 좁은 기억의 틈에서 시작하여 ‘곶’과 ‘물’이라는 심상을 거쳐 더 넓은 풍경(사막, 바다, 하늘)로 나아가는 마음의 이동을 그리고 있다. 이처럼 음반의 진행에 따라 흘러가는 시간은 공간을 확장시키고, 그것은 자연스럽게 정서적인 변화로 귀결한다. 그 결과 이 앨범의 모든 노래들은 순서를 바꿔 들으면 그 흐름을 제대로 감지하지 못할 정도의 유기성을 가지게 되었다.

이러한 의미의 흐름을 뒷받침하기 위해 음악적 표현에서도 보다 치밀해졌다. 이 앨범의 특성을 가사로만 전달하는 것은 아까운 일이라는 생각에서 음향적으로 좀 더 다양한 이미지를 구현하려 했다. 곡의 심리적 성격을 듣는 사람에게 ‘소리’로 느껴지게 하고 싶었다. 더불어 군데군데 배어 나오는 팝(pop)한 느낌으로 인해 ‘통기타 반주의 편안한 음악’이라는 범주에 애매하게 묶여 가사가 품은 내면의 갈등을 온전하게 드러내지 못했던 1집과는 다른 질감을 들려줘야 한다는 의도도 있었다. 그래서 스튜디오의 인공적인 느낌부터 합주실 마루의 현실적인 공간까지 녹음하는 공간의 특성을 다양하게 하여 정서의 진전을 소리로 표현하고자 했다.

무엇보다 주목해야 할 것은 이 앨범이 품고 있는 극도의 간결함이다. 우선 통기타와 자신의 목소리만을 이용한 최소한의 편성은 이번에도 여전하다. 그런데 여기서 더 나아갔다. 1집에 실린 노래가 모두 11곡, 전체 재생 시간은 29분이었다. 무의미한 반복을 피하기 위해 전형적인 대중음악의 구성을 거부한 결과다. 이에 비해 2집은 12곡을 모두 재생하는 시간이 17분 언저리에 머무르고 있다. 이미 많은 것을 덜어냈다고 생각했던 상황에서 다시 한번 덜어냄을 감행한 것이다. 생각의 여름은 이번 앨범을 통해 아무런 군더더기 없이 표현하고자 하는 핵심만을 오롯이 담고자 하는 의지를 단호하게 관철하고 있다.

묘한 것은 이 정도로 창작한 이의 의도가 강하게 반영되어 있음에도 그 결과물에서 아집의 답답함은 느껴지지 않는다는 점이다. 오히려 이것 저것 다 해보고 싶은 표현의 욕심을 몇 번이나 걸러내고 표현의 정수만을 다듬은 결과 이 앨범은 듣는 이가 두고두고 음미할만한 찰나의 여백으로 가득하게 되었다. 온통 감각으로 흘러 넘쳐 때때로 구토를 일으키기도 하는 최근의 음악들에서는 좀처럼 느낄 수 없는 새로운 경험을 선사한다는 면에서 이 앨범은 충분히 매력적이다.

듣는 이들이 이러한 매력을 최대한으로 느낄 수 있으면 좋겠다는 생각으로 이 앨범은 독특한 형태로 출시된다. 일단 CD에는 수록된 12곡이 하나의 트랙으로 담겨 있고 디지털 음원 역시 12곡을 하나의 파일로 묶어서 배포된다. 들을 때마다 만든 이가 구성한 순서대로 듣게끔 강제하기 위함이다. 원하는 노래를 원하는 시간에 들을 수 있는 편리함을 최대한으로 추구하는 최근의 흐름을 역행하는 이러한 시도를 하게 된 까닭은 삶의 수많은 시간 중에 최소한 이 앨범을 듣는 16분만은 창작자가 의도한 바를 온전하게 마주할 수 있으면 좋겠다는 바람 때문이다.

붕가붕가레코드 대중음악 시리즈의 14번째 작품이다. 작곡, 작사, 편곡 및 노래, 연주는 모두 생각의 여름. 밴드 ‘눈뜨고코베인’의 깜악귀가 프로듀서로 참여했다.. 2번부터 5번 트랙의 녹음은 김종삼, 조윤나(토마토 스튜디오), 나머지 녹음과 믹싱은 붕가붕가레코드의 수석 엔지니어 나잠 수, 마스터링은 최효영(Suono Mastering)이 진행했다. 커버 디자인은 언제나처럼 붕가붕가레코드 수석 디자이너 김 기조의 솜씨. CD의 유통은 미러볼뮤직이 맡았고 디지털 음원은 현대카드 뮤직을 통해서만 판매한다.

Requirements
Please take into consideration that we only accept qualifying returns but not exchanges.
Refunds are issued once the returned products clear our inspection.

An item is eligible for cancellation if :

- you posted a Return request within 24 hours of payment and your order is still under “Pending” status
(if your order is under “Queued for Shipment” status, please contact our customer service center) OR
- the order is delayed for more than 10 days since payment and you have not received any notification regarding the delay OR
- the ordered item is out of stock.

We accept return(s) if :

- you receive a product different from your order OR
- you receive a defective product.

① Post a return request on our Return forum within three days of receipt. You are required to attach the photos of the received product(s) and include the item code, the order number, and the reason for the return.
