01. 서울시의 봄 02. 너의 집 03. 라디오 04. 안녕 05. 누구의 방 잘 놀 것 같은 대도시의 청년들, 질주하는 청춘을 매혹시키는 밴드 '포니(The Pony)' 자아도취적이고 무기력한 도시적 감수성을 자극하는 그들만의 공간 [Little Apartment] 2009년, 포니의 데뷔 앨범을 인상적으로 들었다. 두 가지 맥락에서 인상적이었는데 하나는 음악적으로 2000년 이후의 해외 음악 트렌드를 전면적으로 껴안은 사운드 때문이었고, 다른 하나는 태도와 패션 때문이었다. 전자는 개러지 록에 신스 사운드를 가미한 스타일로, 후자는 (그때 막 유행하기 시작한 말대로) ‘시크’한 이미지와 솔직한 인터뷰 등에서 연상된 ‘왠지 만만치 않을 것 같은’ 인상으로 드러났다. 이런 감상은, 적어도 내게는, 어떤 변화에 대한 징후였다. 요컨대 포니는 한국 인디의 질적 성장과 함께 대중매체나 팬들이 ‘인디’ 밴드를 다루거나 소비하는 방식이 바뀌었음을 상징하는 표지였다. 3년 만에 발표한 포니의 신작 [Little Apartment]은 5곡이 수록된 EP다. 물론 밴드의 말대로라면 정규 앨범도 곧 만날 수 있을 것이다. 그렇다면 이 EP는 정규 2집을 가리키는 나침반이거나 예고편일 것이다. 이때 인상적인 건 이 다섯 곡이 지난 앨범의 시끌벅적한 트랙들과는 어느 정도 거리를 두고 있다는 점이다. “소란들”과 “밤새 미친 사랑을 나눠요”보다는 “멋진 신세계”나 “나쁜 피”에 더 가깝다는 얘기다. 물론 1집을 관통하던 신서사이저나 쨍한 기타 톤은 더욱 과감하고 세밀하게 반영된다. 특히 반복되는 킥 사운드에 잡음과 신서사이저가 촘촘하게 끼어들고 소리가 지연되면서 마침내 ‘여의도와 강남 일대를 가득 메운 안개 같은 풍경’을 만드는 첫 곡 “서울시의 봄”과 파도 소리를 배경으로 기타와 보컬이 리버브되며 몽환적이고 향수어린 풍경을 그려내는 “라디오” 등이 어느 정도 자기도취적이고 무기력한 도시적 감수성을 자극한다면, 쿵짝 쿵쿵짝 하는 비트 위로 두껍게 입혀진 건반이 도로를 달리는 속도감을 만드는 “너의 집”과 백 비트와 기타 드라이브가 경쾌한 “안녕” 그리고 기타 피드백 노이즈 위로 정박의 드럼과 기타, 신서사이저가 층층이 포개지다가 한꺼번에 뛰어나오는 “누구의 방” 등은 포니의 ‘잘 놀 것 같은 대도시 청년들’의 이미지를 강화시킨다. 5곡의 EP임에도 포니의 정체성을 잘 드러내는 곡들이 수록되었고 당연히 곡의 밀도도 높다. 기타 톤을 특히 세심하게 공들인 흔적들이 손에 잡힐 듯 선명한데, 1집에 비해 [Little Apartment]가 더 깔끔하거나 풍성하다는 인상을 주는 건 이들이 레코딩에 기울인 시간과 노력의 결과일 것이다. 앞서 말했듯, 내가 생각할 때 포니의 데뷔는 생산과 소비에 있어서 한국 인디 씬의 어떤 전환점을 상징하는 순간이었다. 2009년만 해도 음반 매장이나 스트리밍 서비스에서 이들처럼 ‘조율된 거친 질감’을 선보이는 국내 밴드를 발견하기란 쉽지 않았고 인디 밴드를 해외 록 스타처럼 소비하는 경향도 드물었다. 그런데 이들은 그 모두를 이뤘다. 게다가 음악적 호기심과 완성도가 비례하는 그래프를 만들고 있기도 하다. 사운드와 이미지 모두를 겨누고 있다는 점에서, 특히 스트록스와 스미쓰를 뒤섞은 후에 디스트로이어를 끼얹은 것 같은 감수성을 만들어낸다는 점에서 [Little Apartment]은 포니의 다음 스텝에 대한 단서로 삼기에 충분할 것이다. 정규 2집에 대한 기대가 더 커지는 건 바로 그 때문이다. 글 : 차우진 (음악평론가/ [weiv]에디터) |
