Bye June 11. 사람은 청춘, 현실의 삶에 맞선 치열한 애정과 약간의 비겁함 이지형과 알고 지낸 지 14년이 되었다. 사회라는 큰 바다에서 이토록 오랫동안 질기게도 인연을 맺어온 사람이 과연 몇이나 있을까? 그만큼 누구보다 정말 많은 일을 함께 해왔고, 끊임없이 저질 유머와 커피 수다를 떠들었을지언정 한 번도 진심을 터놓고 이야기한 적은 없었던 듯싶다. 뒤돌아보면 이지형은 결코 속내를 드러내는 사람이 아니었다. 어쩌면 그는 생각이 너무 많거나 소극적인 사람이었는지도 모르겠다. 단 한 번도 남보다 앞서 지르거나 쉽게 결정하는 일이 없었고, 오히려 상황이 종료된 후에 입장을 이야기한 적이 많았다. 그럼에도 이지형을 떠올릴 때면 왠지 모르게 ‘청춘’이란 저돌적이고 풋풋한 이미지의 단어가 늘 오버랩 됐다. 사람의 냄새, 그리고 외관이 주는 첫인상은 어쩔 수 없나 보다. 올봄 그와 통화를 하던 중 새 앨범 작업 소식을 들었다. 숨어들어 가는 목소리로 앨범 제목이 ‘청춘마끼아또’라 하는 순간, 나는 크게 깔깔대고 웃었다. 평소와 어울리지 않게 센 척을 하는 녀석의 예상외 반전에, 한편으로는 제대로 뭔가 나올 것 같은 기대감에 이끌렸던 반응이었을 것이다. 그 후 7개월이 흐르는 동안 그는 새로 만든 음악을 절대 들려주지 않았다. 나 역시도 음악과 관련해서 단 한마디도 하지 않았다. ‘지형이가 미친 사람처럼 하나하나 너무 꼼꼼하고 날이 서 있다.’, ‘처음에는 정신세계를 이해하기 어려웠는데, 결국엔 그의 손을 들어주게 됐다.’ 등 간헐적으로 들리는 작업 참여자들의 증언 속에서도 우리의 유일한 공유물은 ‘청춘마끼아또’라는 단어뿐이었다. 어쨌거나 상황 자체가 평소와 무척이나 달랐다. 그리고 가을의 끝자락에서 완성된 ‘청춘마끼아또’를 조심스레 건네받았다. 생소한 22개의 곡, 두 장의 CD에 담긴 말도 안 되는 101분의 러닝 타임을 연속해서 4번이나 돌려 들었다. 그를 알고 지내온 14년 동안 꽁꽁 담아놓은 미스터리의 봉인들이 풀리는 느낌이 들었다. 어쩌면 그는 완결된 이 이야기를 하고 싶어 그토록 자신의 속내를 드러내지 않았는지도 모르겠다. 청춘을 관통하며 치열하게 붙잡고 싶었던 순간, 거대한 벽 앞에 조금은 비겁해져 버린 감정, 알게 되는 것과 잃어가는 것 사이에서의 두려움, 보잘것없는 삶에 마주한 애정... 이 모든 현실은 이지형, 그리고 당신과 내가 이야기하지 못했던 청춘의 표류이거나 투영이었을 것이다. 솔직히 놀라웠다. 비단 투자된 시간과 비용, 그로 얻어진 방대한 분량만의 이야기는 아닐 것이다. 처음 들었을 때는 혈기 왕성하던 밴드 ‘위퍼(Weeper)’ 시절부터 토이 ‘뜨거운 안녕’을 건너 솔로 소품집 ‘봄의 기적’의 만개까지 파노라마처럼 펼쳐지던 구성에, 두 번째 들었을 때는 너무도 꼼꼼하고 촘촘한 매무새, 유기적으로 의도된 이펙팅과 공간감, 감성의 길에 따라 더해진 각 곡의 보컬 호흡에, 세 번째 들었을 때는 이 모든 것을 포괄하고 있는 ‘청춘마끼아또’의 커다란 흐름과 마스터피스라는 무게감에, 네 번째 들었을 때는 처연한 청춘을 그려낸 인간미의 감동스러움에 놀라웠다. ‘청춘마끼아또’는 이지형 자신의 성향만큼이나, 누군가에게 드러내어 소리치며 요란을 떨어야 할 질감의 작품은 아니다. 사람 하나 없는 가로등 밑 공원, 노곤한 몸을 이끌고 집으로 향하는 텅 빈 새벽녘의 자유로, 눈이 쌓여 인적까지 드문 겨울 작은 카페처럼 무척이나 비밀스럽고 개인적인 상념에 더욱 빛을 발할 듯싶다. 나 역시 속으로 환호하며, 또 때때로 위로를 받으며 듣게 될 것 같다. 수고했고 또 고맙다 이지형. 3집이 아닌 앨범 ‘청춘마끼아또’를 만들어줘서. 솜브레로(민트페이퍼) 청춘 기성세대의 위선적 위로와 그들의 기만을 포장하며 오염된 청춘이란 단어. ‘청춘마끼아또’라는 타이틀은 그 위선과 기만을 청춘 본연의 이름으로 정화한다. 어찌 됐든 ‘청춘’은 아름다운 거라고. 이지형 3집 ‘청춘마끼아또’ 나는 본 앨범을 그룹 위퍼(Weeper) 이후 가장 이지형다운 그의 첫 앨범이라 부르고 싶다. 말라버린 음색으로 공기를 갈랐던 Weeper 이후, 1집 ‘Radio Dayz’ 2집 ‘Spectrum’ 그리고 쉼표처럼 자리했던 그의 소품 ‘Coffee & Tea’, ‘봄의 기적’까지. 앨범마다 고민하는 아티스트로, 같으며 다른 이지형의 현재를 담아냈던 그였다. 하지만 그룹 Weeper보다 더 방황했으며 더 기뻐했으며 더 가라앉아 있었다. 소년이 청년을 노래한 것이다. 조명과 대중의 사랑은 여전했고 그 사랑을 즐기는 영민함과 공허를 고백하기도 한다. 담고 싶은 음악과 덜어내야만 했던 음악, 들려주고 싶은 음악과 부르고 싶은 음악이 조화가 아닌 부대낌의 결과로 이어졌음을 고해한 그는 긴 휴식을 통해 이지형 자신을 고찰하고 이지형 음악을 모색한다. 그리고 이제 청년이 소년을 노래한다. 가장 아름다운 록앤롤 이지형은 시간이 허락한 기술적 완성도와 완숙미보다 ‘아름다움’ 자체에 집중한다. 음악이 시작되면 창문이 열리고 1년 중 가장 분명한 하늘이 들어온다. 다가앉은 이지형은 질감 좋은 목소리로 청춘을 위한 찬가를 시작한다. 부드럽고 시원하고 명쾌하다. 이번 앨범은 이지형만의 록앤롤 사랑이다. 강도하(만화가) ‘마끼아또’는 ‘얼룩’, ‘점찍다’라는 의미의 이탈리아어다. 이지형 3집 ‘청춘마끼아또’는 얼룩진 청춘과 성장을 22개의 트랙에 담아내고 있다. |
