I Wish You A More Snowmas - Traditional English (6:52) 전문 연주 단체로서 유일한 국악 크로스오버 재즈 밴드인 스톤재즈의 크리스마스 캐롤앨범 [More Snow] 해마다 연말이 되면 당연히 들려오는 캐롤. 수많은 사람들의 입에서 맴도는 멜로디이지만 언제 시작되었는지 어떻게 시작되었는지에 대해 얼마나 많은 사람들이 알고 있을지 궁금하다. 사실 조금만 신경써도 쉽게 알 수도 있지만 대부분의 사람들은 그저 있으니까 혹은 나오니까 듣고 즐긴다. 그냥 ‘크리스마스에 부르는 노래’ 정도로만 알고 있을 뿐이다. 정작 크리스마스는 로마가 식민정책의 일환으로 정책적으로 원주민의 축제를 기독교와 접목시키면서 수용하게 되는데서 유래한 문화이며, 캐롤은 원래 무곡의 형태로 오래전 프랑스에서 어원이 기원되고 중세이후 교회에서 나름대로의 형태를 가지고 발달되며 근대에 이르러 대중적 색채를 지니며 오늘날에 이른다는 것 정도의 내용은 쉽게 검색을 통해서도 알 수 있다. 한국엔 해방과 함께 근대화 현대화라는 명목으로 미국을 통해서 기독교와 함께 물밀듯이 쏟아져 들어온 문화중 하나이다. 역사적인 혹은 종교적인 이유야 어쨌든, 오늘날 계절적인 대중가요가 되어버린 현대의 캐롤을 문화적 마인드가 있는 연주인들이 만지작거렸다. 2004년 전문 재즈뮤지션들 3인과 국악인 3인이 결성되어서 소위 크로스오버재즈 라는 장르를 국내에 선보이며 전문 방송프로그램과 국내 문화예술축제 등에서 대중들에게 익숙해지며 성실하게 활동을 펼치고 있는 스톤재즈 밴드가 작년 초 민요곡집인 ‘Crossover korean soul' 과 올 초 재즈명곡집인 ’On Eastern angle' 에 연이어 8번째 음반인 캐롤모음집 ‘More Snow' 을 발표한다. 특히 그들의 이번 음반은 가장 대중화된 외래문화인 캐롤을 현재 대중화 되고 있는 재즈와 국악을 통해 우리식으로 조명했다는데 문화 예술적으로 큰 의의를 갖는다. 그도 그럴 것이 그들의 이번 작업은 캐롤의 역사적 종교적 냄새를 모두 지우고 우리의 정서와 감성으로 채웠기 때문일 것이다. 캐롤의 내용 중 나오는 산타할아버지, 루돌프 사슴, 징글벨 등은 더 이상 그들의 작품에 존재하지 않는다. 사실 이들은 우리네가 알지도 못하거니와 본적도 없는 실체들이다. 우리의 겨울은 오직 눈 덮인 아름답고 평화로운 눈 천지 세상이 있을 뿐이다. 앨범의 타이틀인 ‘More snow' 에서 느낄 수 있듯 이들의 음악 안에는 하얀 눈 같은 순수만이 존재한다. 이들의 캐롤안에는 ‘신나는 눈싸움과 눈사람 만들기’, ‘얼어붙은 논바닥에서 썰매타고 눈 덮인 언덕에서 미끄럼타기’, 그리고 ‘아무 생각없이 눈내리는것 보기’, 또 ‘달밤에 눈 덮인 민둥산에 올라가기’ 등의 신나고 평화롭고 신비로운 그림들만이 있을 뿐이다. 언제부터인가 점점 도시가 자연을 삼키며 우리의 즐겁고 평화로운 겨울이 사라져 가고 있는것을 느낄수 있다. 물론 실제로 그런 상황이 벌어지는것을 막을수는 없지만 마음으로 스스로에게 췌면을 걸어 향수를 달래볼수는 있겠다. 그곳에 예술은 언제든 한몫한다. 이 부분에서 이 스톤재즈가 만든 이 작은 형태의 매체도 큰 몫을 하고 있는 것이다. 종교와 유행 그리고 상업으로 우리들의 감성을 어지럽히고 이젠 그나마 도태되어 있던 겨울문화인 캐롤을 완전히 우리 편으로 만드는 반전이 이 앨범안에 존재하는 것이다. * 한국적인 재즈에 대한 모범 답안 (평론) 오래된, 그러나 꼭 풀어야할 것 같은 숙제가 있다. 정석처럼 답안이 나와 있는 것도 아니고 그것을 푸는 공식이 한정돼 있지도 않다. 음악이란 수치화할 수도 없고 공식 안에 가둘 수도 없는 것이니까. 세계화의 흐름 속에서 지구 반대편에 존재하는 음악도 가까이할 수 있게 된 지금, 그들의 음악을 접하며 우리에게 과연 그들에게 들려줄 고유의 음악이 있는가에 대한 질문을 던져본다. 아니, 그것의 존재여부보다는 자랑스러이 내보일 만큼 유지·발전시켜왔는지 되물어볼 일이다. 국악이라는 왠지 고루하게 여겨지는 이름을 지니고 있는 우리의 음악을 지금은 휴일 대낮에 ‘국악 한마당’같은 프로그램에서만 볼 수 있다고 해서, 민속촌에서나 들을 수 있는 음악이라고 해서 마치 저 먼 나라 민속음악 보듯 그렇게 백안시하지는 않았는지 돌이켜보게 된다. 그런 국악을 현대적인 것으로 리모델링하기 위해 다른 음악의 리듬으로 내장설계를 하고 세련된 화성을 덧입히는 작업은 스톤재즈가 그 처음은 분명 아니다. 이른바 크로스오버 재즈 라는 장르 혹은 양식으로 부르기도 참 모호한 그 음악적 용어가 우리 귀에 익숙해지면서 국악과 다른 장르의 결합은 종종 있어온 시도인 것이다. 그리고 그 시도에서 재즈와의 결합은 어쩌면 필연적인 것이었다. 정서적으로나 리듬에서나 그 둘은 같은 선상에 놓여 빈번히 설명되었으며 결합이 어색하지 않았기 때문이기도 할 것이다. 그런 국악의 재즈적 연주 혹은 재즈라는 장르 안에서 풀어내는 국악의 리듬과 멜로디는 스톤재즈에 이르러 무척 안정적으로 그 답을 제시하고 있는 듯 하다. 정답이라고 확신할 순 없어도 모범답안을 제시한다고 느낄 정도로 말이다. 즉, 다른 장르와 만났지만 국악의 원형을 잃지 않은 채 그 정서와 한을 고스란히 담아냈고 또 재즈로 연주함에 있어서도 신명나는 혹은 한이 어린 멜로디를 지나치게 해체하지 않으면서도 모던함 속에서 차분하게 잘 풀어냈다는 이야기다. 정서와 연주에 있어 내적인 교감을 느낄 수 있다는 의미이다. 프로필을 자세히 보니 오랜 세월 동안 많은 작업을 해온 것 같다. 지나간 프로필 보다 그리고 지금 듣고 있는 이 음악보다 앞으로가 더 기대되는 건 막연하게 품고 지식이라고 착각했던 것에 대한 명쾌한 설명과 증명이라도 하듯 음악으로 풀어내는 이 여섯 명의 연주인들의 시원한 손끝에서 비롯되는 건 아닐까. 작은 돌들이 모여 탑을 이루듯, 그렇게 쌓아올리는 스톤재즈의 음악을 듣는 일은 진지하면서도 즐겁다. 재즈평론가 : 권기숙 |
