Feel So Alive 12. 너와 내가 함께 있는 건 (You & I, Room Version) 팝 음악이 본디 지녔던 미덕을 일러주는, 제대로 된 팝 음악. 한충완 5집! 팝 앨범 [Feel So Alive] 한충완은 1집 [Love Song](1993), 2집 [Corea Corea](1995), 3집 [Off Road](2001), 4집 [회색](2004), 그리고 다이나믹 듀오가 피처링하여 재발매한 2집 [Corea Corea](2005) 작업을 통해 고급스럽고 실험적인 음악성을 피력해왔다. 더불어 1980년대부터 따로또같이, 봄여름가을겨울, 양희은, 이문세, 여행스케치, 이소라, 이은미, 김현철, 자우림, 김동률, 핑클, 강타, 그리고 김덕수 사물놀이패, 소프라노 신영옥 등과의 앨범과 공연에 피아니스트로, 작, 편곡가로 참여해온 관록의 뮤지션이다. 김광민, 정원영, 한상원과 함께 버클리 유학 1세대로 미국의 대중음악, 재즈 이론을 익혔던 한충완에게 가장 익숙한 자리는 1993년부터 한국대중음악인 산실인 서울예술대학 실용음악과 교수로 몸담으면서 후학들을 지도해온, 실용음악 교육자의 모습이었다. 한충완의 다섯 번째 정규 앨범 [Feel So Alive]는 그의 10년 만의 정규 앨범이다. 오랜 기다림 끝에 접하는 그의 새로운 음악에 장착된 반가움과 신선함은 이번 작업이 그간에 행했던 한충완의 음악과는 사뭇 다른 표정을 지니고 있다는 점이다. 이 다름의 가장 우선하는 부분은 ‘몹시도 대중적’이라는 점에서부터 비롯된다. 한충완의 음악에 우선적으로 따라다녔던 재즈의 냄새는 대폭 지워져 있다. 복잡한 화성적 진행과 구성, 즉흥연주, 리듬과 코드의 변환 등을 기하지 않고 단순하면서도 또렷한 선율미와 세련된 코드 진행, 의미가 잘 전달되는 가사가 굳건한 무게 중심이 되고 있다. 귀에 잘 들리는 멜로디와 정직한 가사 전달이 곡을 끌어가고, 리듬은 제 자리에서 딱딱 받쳐주는 본연의 역할에 충실하다. 귀에 잘 들어오는, 그래서 금세 흥얼거리게끔 만들어진 곡의 짜임새는 모든 대중음악이 탐내는 덕목이다. 한충완의 새로운 음악들은 분명한 기억 효과를 동반하여 선명하게 각인되는 멜로디, 그래서 따라 부를 수 있게끔 만드는 후킹 효과(Hooking Effect)를 동반한다. ‘달콤한 이 멜로디에’라는 가사가 명시된 시작곡 ‘널 사랑해’, 그리고 영어 가사로 불려진 ‘Things I Will Never You’, 한충완이 직접 노래한 ‘Feel So Alive’에서 후킹 효과는 도드라진다. 단순하면서도 고급스러운 멜로디가 이끄는 곡들에는 우아함이 깃들어져 있어 단정하고, 정연하고, 안정된 느낌을 풍성함으로 피어낸다. 철저히 ‘반주’의 자리에서 제 역할을 다하고 있는 기악 연주도 노래와 조화롭게 어울리고 있다. ‘듣기 쉬운 팝 음악’이라는 목적이 있음에도 12곡의 수록곡은 낱낱으로 분리되면서도 하나의 이야기처럼 엮여진, 이야기 구조가 있어 구성지고 짜임새가 있다. 한충완은 수록곡 전곡의 작, 편곡, 작사, 프로듀싱을 직접 주관하며, 오늘, 자신의 이야기를 음악으로 들려준다. 기타 연주와 일부의 드럼 샘플링을 제외하고는 한충완은 모든 악기를 직접 미디 작업으로 연주하고, 직접 프로그래밍했다. 일종의 원 맨 밴드의 형식을 빌려, 자신의 의도를 왜곡 없이 실천하고 있다. 가사는 그가 서울예대에서 직접 수업하고 있는 싱어송라이팅 과목 ‘실용음악가사론’에서 발표되었던 제자들의 가사들을 수정, 보완한 작품들이 중심이 되어 있다. 요즘의 세대, 누구나 공감할 수 있는 일상의 이야기, 사랑 이야기들이 담긴 ‘유행가’의 내용성도 그렇게 확보되어 있다. 한충완의 새 앨범의 결과를 읽으며, 결코 놓쳐버려서는 안 되는 부분은 소위 ‘쿠세’(클리쉐, Cliche) 없이 불려진 노래라는 점이다. 거추장스러운 치장, 상투적인 습관이나 흉내 없이 담백하게 불려진 노래는, 오히려 음악적 완성도를 높여주는 결과가 되었다. 오랜 음악적 이력만큼이나 이름값, 실력을 빌릴 수 있는 많은 선, 후배, 제자들이 있겠지만, 굳이 유명세를 빌리지 않은 채, 현재 한충완의 곁에서 가장 가까이서 음악적 교감을 하고 있는 제자들로 보컬리스트들의 진용을 꾸렸다. 각 곡에 어울리는 목소리, 느낌을 찾아 보컬을 초대, 배치하고, 그들은 한충완의 신념, 품성, 가르침을 쫓아 담백하게 노래한다. 그 촌스럽고 식상한 치기를 발견할 수 없음은 음악 그 자체에 집중할 수 있게끔 배려하고, 덕분에 앨범은 마치 한충완의 새로운 송 북(Song Book), 작곡집으로 읽혀진다. 단순하고 편안한 구조의 팝 음악을 목적함에도 12곡의 수록곡들은 다채로운 무늬들이 담겨져 있다. 그래서 지루하지 않은 채 앨범 전곡을 풍부함으로 읽어갈 수 있다. 랩과 토크 박스가 더해진 ‘짜증’, 실제 해당 뮤지컬의 삽입곡을 편곡했나 싶었던 ‘장발장’, 스마트폰 어플리케이션 연주에 기타와 보컬 샘플링을 덧입힌 ‘Conduit’, 한충완의 의외로 매력적인 보컬이 깊이와 넉넉함을 안겨주는 ‘Feel So Alive’ 등은 그 다양한 시도의 증거들이다. 곡의 구성과 형식, 사운드의 결은 197-80년대 영미의 팝 음악이 지녔던 따스하고 풍성함을 향하고 있어서인지, 카펜터즈, 아바, 비지스, 필 콜린스의 음악과의 연상이 겹치기도 했다. 생각해보면, 오래 전 팝 음악들은 참으로 좋았다. 그 옛날의 라디오, 테이프, LP 시대의 유산들은 따뜻함이었고, 정겨움이었고, 정직함이었다. 진솔한 소리의 울림들이 있어 우리네 삶과 기억은 행복할 수 있었던 것 같다. 한충완이 세공(細工)의 작업으로 빚어낸 음악은 팝 음악이 본디 지녔던 미덕을 다시금 일러주는, 귀한 자극이자 조언이 되어준다. 지난 20여 년간 무대에서, 교육의 현장에서 한국 대중음악을 지켜왔던 어느 아티스트의 제대로 음악다운 이야기에, 내가 감사해하는 이유이다. 글 / 하종욱 (음악 칼럼니스트) |
