Didipack형 (Gatefold) 아련하게 가슴을 파고드는 무색무취의 포크록 사운드!! 포크 마니아들의 찬사를 받아온 명곡 'Gone', 'Bitterfeast'가 수록된 70년대 최초 Queer Folk 싱어송라이터 마이클 코헨의 두 번째 앨범. 담백함과 우아함이 담긴 포크 음악!! 십여 년 전, 소위 '원판'으로 불리던 중고 LP가게 사장님의 추천으로 마이클 코헨이라는 가수의 노래를 처음 들었다. 포크 음악이라면 미국이든, 영국이든, 혹은 다른 외국어로 노래하는 곡이든 가리지 않고 찾아 헤매던 때였다. 당시 늘 입에 달고 다니던 표현으로 말하자면 "가슴을 먹먹하게 해 줄 음악"에 혈안이 되어 있던 나에게 들려주셨던 그의 노래는 'Gone'이었다. 그때의 가슴 먹먹함은 지금도 이 노래를 들을 때 마다 같은 느낌으로 다가 온다. 꽤 비싼 값을 치러야 손에 넣을 수 있는 앨범이었기에 그 자리에서 앨범을 집어 들지는 못했다. 그 후 오랜 시간이 흐른 뒤에야 앨범 속에 들어 있는 LP콜렉터들의 욕구를 자극할 만한 6페이지짜리 북클릿과 함께 'Gone'에 버금가는 여러 트랙들의 보석 같은 곡들을 만날 수 있었다. 미국 뉴욕출신의 포크 싱어송라이터 마이클 코헨의 첫 번째 앨범은 1973년 자주제작으로 발표 되었다. 이라는 타이틀의 이 앨범에는 크레딧에도 마이크 코헨이라는 이름으로 표기가 되어 있다. 명곡 'Gone'을 수록하고 있는 그의 명작 『What Did You Expect...?: Songs About the Experiences of Being Gay』는 같은 해 스미소니언 협회(Smithonian Institute)의 포크 레이블인 Folkways Records를 통해 소개가 되었다. 그리고 1976년 세 번째 앨범인 『Some Of Us Had To Live』 역시 같은 레이블에서 발매가 되어 두 앨범은 지금도 CD로 만나 볼 수 있다. 하지만 이 앨범들의 LP는 중고음반 시장에서도 쉽게 구하기 힘든 고가의 음반들이었다. 70년대에 발표한 이 석장의 앨범들은 극소수의 포크 마니아들 사이에서만 회자되어 왔던 터라 마이클 코헨에 대한 자료는 거의 전무한 상태나 다름없다. 미국에서 조차 앨범에 들어 있는 정보들 외에는 그에 대한 이렇다 할 이야기를 듣기가 힘들다고 한다. 다만 동성애에 관한 노래를 발표한 최초의 포크 가수로 여기에 관심을 가진 음악팬들 사이에서 가장 먼저 거론되는 아티스트 중의 한 명으로 알려져 있다는 이야기는 확실한 듯하다. Folk Masterpiece Collection의 첫 번째 주자로 뽑힌 마이클 코헨. 더구나 동시에 국내 발매되는 그의 앨범 『What Did You Expect...?: Songs About the Experiences of Being Gay』와 『Some Of Us Had To Live』는 그의 음악을 궁금하게 여겨왔던 애호가들에게는 완벽한 조건을 갖춘 선물이 될 것이다. LP슬리브 디자인으로 발매되는 이번 앨범들은 오리지널 LP에 들어 있는 북클릿까지 재현해서 담아내고 있다. 그 안에는 펜으로 그린 그림들과 함께 수록곡들의 가사가 담겨 있다. 손으로 쓴 예쁘장한 필체의 가사들을 쳐다보고 있노라면, 중고 LP콜렉터라면 느껴 보았을 음반 커버와 내지에서 나는 독특한 그 냄새가 느껴질 것만 같다. 또 하나의 선물은 음질이다. 여러 차례의 심혈을 기울인 리마스터링 끝에 뛰어난 음질을 구현해 내어 Folkways Records의 CD보다 훨씬 뛰어난 소리로 이 귀한 포크 아티스트의 음악들을 감상 할 수 있다는 점이다. 한 곡 한 곡 저마다의 특별한 분위기를 가진 아홉 개의 수록곡들은 모두 마이클 코헨이 만든 곡이다. 앨범의 시작을 알리는 'The Last AngryYoung Man'은 늦은 오후의 햇살처럼 수수한 포크록 사운드를 들려준다. 중, 고음을 넘나들며 가볍게 내뱉듯 노래하는 마이클 코헨의 보컬과 화장기 없는 일렉트릭 기타의 가벼운 발놀림이 즐거운 자극을 선사한다. 곧이어 골수 포크 마니아들로 하여금 마이클 코헨의 이름을 기억하게 했던 명곡 'Gone'을 만나게 된다. 차분하게 울리는 어쿠스틱 기타와 스트링의 아련한 울림 속에 어두운 색조로 노래하는 마이클 코헨의 목소리가 가슴을 먹먹하게 만든다. 찾아 나서지 않아도 저절로 다가오는 음악만 듣는 것이 아니라 자신의 마음과 영혼을 울릴 음악을 찾아 헤매는 사람들, 특히 개성과 감각에만 의존하지 않는 포크 음악이라는 거대한 숲에서 헤매는 이들에게 이런 곡을 만난다는 건 그리 쉬운 일이 아닐 것이다. 바로 'Gone'과 같은 곡을 만나기 위해 수많은 실패를 거듭하면서도 다음, 또 다음 음반을 찾아 헤매는 것이 아닐까....... 왈츠풍의 소박한 기타 반주에 하모니카를 곁들여 풋풋한 선율을 노래하는 'Bitter Beginnings'. 쌀쌀한 가을에서 깊은 겨울로 흘러가는 시간에 너무나 잘 어울릴 만한 곡 'Bitterfeast'는 이 앨범을 들어 본 많은 포크 마니아들이 'Gone', 'Bitter Beginnings'와 함께 앨범의 백미로 손꼽는 곡으로 마이클 코헨의 음악이 지닌 예민한듯하면서도 관조적인 분위기가 너무나 아름답게 표현되어 있다. 담백한 선율미를 지닌 곡의 테마를 피아노로 연주한 전주와 간주가 오래도록 귓가를 떠나지 않고 여운을 남긴다. 두 곡 모두 중독성 강한 트랙이다. 앨범의 끝자락에서 만나게 되는 또 하나의 숨은 보석 'Orion'은 포크 싱어송라이터로서의 전형적인 모습을 보여주는 곡으로 맛깔스러운 어쿠스틱 기타가 이끌어 가는 곡 전개가 일품이다.
