THIS TIME OF THE YEAR "미국, 프랑스, 일본 iTunes 재즈 차트 No.1에 오른 화제의 데뷔 앨범" "캐나다의 신세대 재즈 보컬리스트로 mp3 세대에게 폭발적인 인기몰이 중" "2006 몬트리올 재즈 페스티벌 오프닝 무대 장식" 캐나다의 신세대 재즈 보컬리스트 소피 밀먼(Sophie Milman)의 데뷔 앨범이다. 국내 팬들이 보기에 그녀의 이름은 다소 생소하지만 해외에서는 이미 동향의 캐나다 여가수인 다이애나 크롤(Diana Krall)이나 마들렌느 페이루(Madeleine Peyroux)와 비교되는 등 벌써부터 비상한 관심을 끌고 있는 보컬 재즈계의 유망주다. 이제 고작 첫 음반이 나왔지만 지난해 몬트리올 재즈 페스티벌의 오프닝 무대에서 공연을 가지는 등 스포트라이트를 받고 있다. 매력적인 외모를 지닌 금발의 소피 밀먼은 20대 초반의 나이에도 불구하고 원숙한 보컬 테크닉을 지녔다. 스윙 재즈를 잘 소화해내는 그녀의 가창력을 보노라면 베테랑 재즈 여가수들을 쉽게 떠오르기도 한다. 그래서 서구 언론은 다이애나 크롤이나 제인 몬하이트(Jane Monheit)의 아성에 도전장을 내민 '신세대 재즈 디바'로 평가하고 있다. 특히 소피 밀먼의 노래는 정통 재즈 보컬을 계승한 타입이라 재즈 팬들의 폭발적인 지지를 예상케 한다. 원래 러시아에서 태어난 소피 밀먼은 가족들과 이스라엘에 잠시 살았다가 사춘기 시절 캐나다에 정착했다. 그곳에서 본격적으로 재즈 음악에 빠져들었고 흑인음악에도 심취하게 되었다. 캐나다는 소피 밀먼에게 재즈 음악을 훨씬 풍성하게 접할 수 있는 기회의 나라였다. 당연히 재즈에 대한 관심은 증폭됐고 빌리 할리데이, 엘라 피츠제럴드, 사라 본 등 여러 재즈 여가수의 노래들을 들으면서 재즈를 향한 열정에 사로잡혔다. 소피 밀만의 보이스는 관능적이고 소울풀한 음색이 특히 매력적이다. 보사노사 특유의 찰랑거리는 리듬이 인상적인 첫 곡 'Agua De Beber (Water To Drink)'는 브라질리언 재즈의 고전으로 안토니오 카를로스 조빔(Antonio Carlos Jobim)과 노먼 김벨(Norman Gimbel)이 공동으로 작곡한 곡이다. 그리고 빌리 할리데이의 오리지널인 'Guilty'는 짝사랑을 갈구하는 아주 유명한 곡으로 밀먼이 당차게 도전장을 내민 로맨틱 무드 송이다. 조지 거쉰과 아이라 거쉰 형제의 작품 'The Man I Love'는 전형적인 재즈 보컬 스타일의 노래로 밀먼이 개인적으로 가장 좋아하는 곡이라 밝히고 있다. 그밖에 찰랑대는 스윙 재즈 맛이 살아 있는 슬로우 댄스 풍의 'Lonely In New York', 틴 팬 앨리 시절의 명작곡가인 콜 포터의 명곡 'My Heart Belongs To Daddy', 밝고 경쾌한 보컬 재즈 곡 'I Feel Pretty' 등 밀먼의 보컬은 상당히 여유롭고 고혹적인 매력을 발산한다. 에디트 피아프(Edith Piaf)가 노래한 불후의 명곡인 'La Vie En Rose(장밋빛 인생)'의 리메이크도 눈길을 끈다.
