Speed Man 12. 깨어나 일어나 13. 우리 모두 여기에 가뭄의 단비 같은 정통 록의 포효, 비갠 후 [City Life] 그룹 ‘비갠 후’를 리드하는 유병열은 ‘윤도현밴드’의 앨범 [한국 록 다시 부르기]에서의 명연으로 여전히 록 마니아들의 기억을 점하고 있는 기타리스트로, 비갠 후는 그가 윤도현밴드를 나와 ‘안치환과 자유’에서 활동한 드러머 나성호 등과 결성한 밴드다. 2002년 신년 초에 데뷔 앨범을 선보였으니 무려 8년 가까운 세월이 흘러서 두 번째 앨범이 나오게 된 것이다. 유병열과 나성호는 그간 또 하나의 프로젝트 ‘이퍼블릭’ 밴드로 뛰었고 활발한 공연 세션 활동을 펼쳐왔다. 그룹의 곡을 도맡아 쓰고 있는 유병열이 비갠 후라는 틀을 다시 꺼내든 이유는 [City Life]의 사운드로 단박에 알아차릴 수 있다. 그는 펑크, 모던 록, 일렉트로니카 그리고 최근 엣지라는 외형적 세련과 함께 키치적이며 재미 중심으로 흐르고 있는 주류 록 감성과 달리 가고 싶었다. 노이즈 가득한 일렉트릭 기타연주로 박차고 나가는 첫 곡 ‘City life’과 강력한 록 넘버 ‘Fighter’가 말해준다. 록발라드 형식인 타이틀곡 ‘소망Ⅱ’도 전주가 지나선 곧바로 기타 베이스 드럼 건반의 하모니를 전면에 내걸며 우리가 오랫동안 들어왔던 파워풀한 록 사운드 패턴을 회복한다. 유병열과 나성호는 연주와 관련, 이퍼블릭에서 가급적 나서지 않으려 했던 일종의 자제심을 모두 다 던져버리고 하고 싶은 대로, 터뜨리고 싶은 대로 마음껏 폭발한다. 마치 분풀이 하듯 솔로든, 하모니든 곳곳에서 온갖 플레이를 동원한다. ‘소망Ⅱ’에서처럼 새 멤버 장재혁(베이스)과 정광호(건반)도 그들과 폭발의 합(合)을 만들어낸다. 앨범은 한마디로 블루스 감성이 저변에 흐르는 록 사운드의 포효라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 따라서 설령 귀에 감기는 선율로 치장한 조용한 것들도 결코 록의 포스를 놓치는 일이 없다. 블루지한 감성의 록이라면 황금기라는 1960년대에 확립된, 이른바 정통 록의 프레임이다. 비갠 후 멤버들은 그들이 아는 그리고 장기간 해왔던 록의 전통, 정통의 형식미를 되살리고 거기에 그들의 야망, 지향 그리고 분노를 토해낸다. 수록곡 ‘Fighter’나 ‘Money’, ‘Cyber people’, ‘깨어나 일어나’로 확연히 알 수 있듯 노랫말은 우리가 처한 갑갑한 도시 생활 아니 소외를 야기하고 있는 현재의 사회적 분위기에 대한 일갈과 아우성으로 가득하다. 앨범의 베스트 트랙 중 하나라고 할 ‘Dreamer’는 고단한 삶에 대한 피로감을 고백하면서도 비상의 의지를 잃지 않으려는 희망의 메시지를 담아낸다. 이러한 솔직하고 날선 메시지 또한 사운드와 더불어 록의 주요한 지향 아닌가. 유병열과 나성호가 바랐던 정통 록의 포효라는 욕구를 후련하게 충족시켜준 인물은 노래하는 김길중이다. 전에 ‘스플래시 로맨스’라는 밴드에서 활동한 이력이 전부라는 그는 올해의 주목할 록 보컬리스트로 손색이 없을 만큼 탁월하고 힘 있는 보컬을 들려준다. 블루지한 필이 앨범에 살짝 퍼져있는 것도, 유병열을 위시한 멤버들이 양껏 연주를 풀어헤칠 수 있는 것도 출중한 보컬 소화력을 지닌 김길중 덕분이다. 그는 스트레이트하면서도 블루지하고, 솟아오르다가도 내려올 줄 아는 그러면서도 자기만의 톤을 구사하는 근래 보기 드문 보컬의 소유자다. 가뭄의 단비 같은 반가운 음악이다. 모던이니, 쿨이니, 엣지니 하는 질보다는 무늬와 포장술만이 판치는 현실에서 간만에 정돈되고, 실하고, 당당한 록 사운드를 만난다. 돌아온 비갠 후와 함께 우리는 오랜 역사가 검증한 록의 중력과 형식미를 되찾는다. 임진모(www.izm.co.kr) |

We accept return(s) if :- you receive a product different from your order OR - you receive a defective product.
[ Return Instructions ] ① Post a return request on our Return forum within three days of receipt.
