[This Is Acting]은 가수로서의 시아가 담긴 앨범이며 작곡가로서의 시아가 담긴 앨범이기도 하다. [This Is Acting]은 다른 가수들에게 보냈으나 거절당한 곡들로 꾸려졌으며 그녀의 7번째 정규 앨범이다. 앨범 제목이 ‘이것은 연기하는 것이다’인 이유도 그 때문이다. 다른 이들을 염두에 두고 만든 곡을 본인이 직접 부르니 뭔가 연기를 하고 있는 느낌이 들었다고 한다. 첫 싱글 “Alive”는 아델 (Adele)에게 전달 되었던 곡이다. 작곡가 이름 란에 아델은 물론이고 그녀의 최근 음악 파트너이자 “When We Were Young”의 작곡가 토바이어스 제소 주니어 (Tobias Jesso Jr)가 적혀 있다. 아마도 세 사람이 [25] 앨범을 위해 만들었다가 결국 실리지 않은 것으로 보인다. 시아가 특히 아끼는 곡이라는 “Bird Set Free”는 영화 [피치 퍼펙트 2]를 위해 만들어진 곡이라고 한다. 영화사가 시아의 다른 곡인 “Flashlight”를 고르는 바람에 영화엔 삽입되지 못했으며 리한나, 아델에게 보내졌다가 결국 시아의 앨범에 실리게 되었다. 시아는 “Bird Set Free”를 누군가에게 보낼 때마다 “내가 부를 걸”이라는 후회를 느낄 만큼 애착을 가진 곡이라고 말한다. 시아는 Rolling Stone과의 인터뷰에서 “Cheap Thrills”에 대해 이렇게 말했다. “우리는 리한나에게 “Cheap Thrills”를 보냈지만 그들은 쓰지 않았어요. 그런데 그 이후로 차에서 그 곡을 듣는 것을 멈출 수가 없었어요. 여러 이유로 전 그 곡을 듣는 것이 정말 좋았어요. 물론 제가 이렇게 말하면 그저 ‘자기 자랑’이라고 얘기할 수도 있지만 전 보통은 제 곡을 그렇게 즐겨 듣는 편이 아니거든요. 그러나 그 곡엔 제 기분을 좋아지게 하는 뭔가 희망적인 것이 있어요.” 그 밖에도 “Footprints”는 비욘세 (Beyonce)에게 보냈던 곡이며, 샤키라 (Shakira)에게 갔다가 돌아온 곡도 있다고 한다. 시아에 따르면 “One Million Bullets”를 제외한 모든 곡이 누군가에게 주려고 만든 곡이라고 한다. 음악적으로 [This Is Acting]은 전작들의 연장선에 있다. 특히 시아에게 결정적 전환점이 됐던 “Chandelier”와 여러 면에서 닮았다. 가사는 비참과 환희가 공존하는 강렬한 감정 표현에 충실하고, 광범위한 스케일로 큰 공간감에 초점을 뒀으며, 보컬은 고통을 토해내듯 고음으로 내지른다. 첫 싱글 ‘Alive’는 새 앨범의 이런 지향을 잘 보여준다. 가사는 막다른 길에서도 살아남겠다는 희망의 의지를 다지고 있고, 사운드는 거대한 동굴에서 듣는 듯 세고 몽롱하며, 후렴구의 보컬은 목소리가 갈라질 정도로 처절하게 내지른다. “Bird Set Free”도 다르지 않다. 기본적으로는 희망을 노래하는 피아노 발라드지만 스케일 큰 사운드 컨셉과 강렬한 감정 표출 면에선 “Alive”와 닮았다. 가사는 세상 끝에서의 희망을 외친다. “One Million Bullets”의 기본 골격은 서정적인 피아노 발라드지만 강렬한 비트와 극한 상황 설정으로 시아만의 개성을 녹여냈다. 구절-후렴구가 명확히 구분되는 전형적인 팝이지만 그 안에 강렬한 비트, 강렬한 가사, 강렬한 보컬, 몽롱한 사운드를 얹는다. “시아 다운” 곡의 전형이다. [This Is Acting]은 “Chandelier”로 한껏 올라간 기대를 충분히 만족시킬 좋은 앨범이다. 무엇보다도 시아 특유의 폭발하는 감정의 희망가들이 여럿 수록됐다. 보편적 공감대를 잘 자극하는 영리한 작사 실력 역시 발견할 수 있다. 대중음악의 힘이 ‘위로’에 있다고 믿는 분들이라면 이 앨범을 더 좋아할 것이다. |

We accept return(s) if :- you receive a product different from your order OR - you receive a defective product.
[ Return Instructions ] ① Post a return request on our Return forum within three days of receipt. You are required to attach the photos of the received product(s) and include the item code, the order number, and the reason for the return. ② A customer service representative will be in contact to assist you by email or phone. ③ Items returned must be in their original condition, which includes tags and any packaging. Also, you need to include a note of your order number, name, and user ID.
