To Yibam (Jazzy Ver.) 2010년 8월 CJ AZIT에서 주관하는 인디 밴드 지원 프로그램 Tune Up에서 우승한 '이기적인 네오소울의 왕, 마호가니킹' 올해 국내 흑인 음악씬에 묵직한 중고 신인들이 많이 등장했다. 그 중에서 마호가니킹은 음악적 성향부터 보컬, 가사, 비주얼 까지 어느 한 부분도 평범한 구석이란 눈 씻고 찾아봐도 찾을 수 없는 개성 넘치는 집단이다. 개성 넘친다는 말은 개인의 취향을 떠나 누가 보기에도 자극적이란 말이고 호불호가 엄청 갈릴 것이며 어떤이엔 불편함을 어떤 이에겐 극한의 쾌감을 줄 수도 있다는 말이다. 이말씨, 아라, 문득 으로 구성된 마호가니킹은 프로듀싱 팀이다. 그리고 본인들이 만든 노래를 그들이 직접 연주한다. 특이하게도 삼인 모두 목소리로 연주하며 쉬이 볼 수 없는 노래 실력을 가지고 보컬팀의 행세를 하기도 한다. 2010년 8월 CJ AZIT에서 주관하는 인디 밴드 지원 프로그램 TUNE UP 에서 우승하면서 주목 받기 시작한 이들의 이력 역시 범상치 않다. 2003년 팀 결성 후 각기 재즈 보컬, 작곡가, 작가로 활동하다 돌연 2009년 '숭숭가무단' 이라는 다원예술단체를 창단하여 전문 무용수들과 함께 현대 무용 작품을 공연하기 시작한다. 예술 작품에서 타 장르와의 콜라보가 드문 일은 아니지만 전문 음악인들의 집단이 음악인으로서의 마인드를 버리고 온전한 무용수로 무대에 서는 일은 극히 드문 일이다. 그리고 그 작품성 역시 만만치 않아 지난 7월 국립극장에서의 연으로서 그 가치를 인정받았다. 처음 발매되는 독집 앨범 '이말씨 아라 문득' 을 살펴보면 이들이 얼마만큼 직설적으로 작업해 왔는지 단박에 알 수 있다. 앨범의 포문을 여는 Breakdown은 타이틀이자 경탄할만한 완성도를 보여주는 곡이다. 곡의 시작부터 끝까지 한치도 긴장의 끈을 놓치 않으며 심플한 구성임에도 훌륭한 연주와 편곡으로 결코 지루할 틈을 주지 않는다. 완전한 보컬 곡의 편곡에서 이렇듯 완성도 있는 연주의 합은 흔한 일이 아니다. 이어 지는 To yibam은 첫 싱글로 발매 했던 곡의 리마스터 버젼이다. 일찍이 올 해 4월 내한한 퀸시 존스에게 극찬을 받았던 곡이니 만큼 Breakdown에 뒤지지 않는 완성도를 보여준다. 세번째 트랙 Little Little 까지 들으면 이들이 어떤 스타일의 음악을 지향하는지 눈치 챌 수 있을 것이다. 이웃 청년은 의외의 트랙으로 따듯한 포크 스타일의 곡이다. 다음 곡 Do ae ri pa re 는 퍼쿠션과 기타의 단촐한 구성 위에 아라의 스캣만으로 연주되는 트랙이며 이어지는 눈이 예쁘게는 앨범에서 유일한 발라드 곡이지만 이 역시 범상한 구성은 아니다. 낼 수 있는 끝음까지 단 한 치의 절제 없이 끝까지 토해내는 이말씨의 보컬과 홍준호의 기타 솔로는 누구의 눈치도 보지 않는다. 재치있는 할매 보쌈 뒤 이어지는 디스코풍의 Comic baby 는 앨범에서 그나마 트랜디한 트랙이다. 눈이 예쁘게의 나일론 기타 버젼과 투 이밤의 재지 버젼이 의외의 보석 같은 트랙인데 새로운 연주와 노래로 의외의 기쁨을 선사한다. 앨범 전반적으로 훌륭한 연주와 심플한 구성에도 지루하지 않게 조율한 프로듀서의 숨은 공이 곳곳에 보인다. 흑인음악 전문 프로듀서 윤재경의 노련한 프로듀싱은 너무 직설적이라 부담스럽기까지 한 마호가니킹의 음악을 해치지 않으면서도 단단하게 제련해 내는데 성공했다. 이 둘의 만남으로 특출난 개성이 극한의 쾌감으로 표출되었다. 마호가니킹은 유려하면서도 단단한 아라와 묵직한 저음의 문득, 날렵하고 파워풀한 고음의 이말씨의 보컬이 빚어내는 시너지 효과는 단순한 보컬팀으로서도 드문 합으로 이들의 음악이 충분히 대중에게 어필 할 수 있는 가능성을 품고 있음을 시사한다. 마호가니킹의 첫 앨범 '이말씨 아라 문득' 은 근래 들어 본 앨범 중 가장 자극적이고 원초적인 음반이다. 무언가 과잉된 표현도 흔하지 않은 타입의 일탈이여서 오히려 카타르시스로 다가온다. 세련됨과 투박함의 미묘한 지점에서 보여주는 균형 감각에 찬사를 보내며 앨범 전체의 완성도를 떠나 마호가니킹 스타일이라 부를 만한 사운드를 뿜어 냈다는데 큰 의미를 두고 싶다. 앨범 한장 없이 음악계의 입소문 만으로 방송과 퀸시 존스 초청 공연 같은 중요한 무대에 오르고 지난 7월 발매된 김광석 다시 듣기 앨범에 자신들의 버젼을 수록하는 것 같은 일들은 여간해선 인디 뮤지션에겐 일어나지 않는다. 스스로를 소심하다 표현하던 이들이 첫 번째 앨범 제목으로 각자의 이름을 적어 넣었다. 나란히 적힌 귀여운 세 명의 이름들이 왠지 친해 보이고 개구쟁이 같아 보인다. 예술을 쉬지 않으며 언뜻 쉽게 지르고 보는 이들의 정신 없는 뮤비의 감동 역시 음반과 다르지 않다. 다음 행보가 벌써 기대되는 대형 신인의 등장이다. |
