2007년, 가요계에 비보이의 새로운 대안을 제시한 맥시멈 크루 2007년 4월, 비보이 최초의 음반이라는 화제를 불러 일으키며 많은 사람들의 기대 속에 발매된 맥시멈 크루의 첫 싱글 [To The Maximum]은 그들을 대중들에게 알리는데 크게 공헌했다.


가수와 댄서가 명확하게 분리되어 있던 가요계의 기존 공식을 깨뜨리며, 화려한 비보잉이 가미된 퍼포먼스와 강한 랩이 조화를 이루었던 타이틀곡 ‘To The Maximum’으로 주요 음악 프로그램을 장악하며 대중들에게 강력한 이미지를 빠르게 확산시켰던 맥시멈 크루는 에딘버러 프린지 페스티벌, 태국 아시안 힙합 페스티벌, 홍콩, 두바이, 터키, 일본 등 빠듯한 해외 스케쥴 속에서도 쉴 새 없이 방송과 공연 등 국내 활동을 소화하며 가수라는 새로운 도전에 있어 소기의 성과를 거두었다.


특히 신인 발굴 프로그램이었던 ‘쇼바이벌’에 약 3개월간 꾸준히 출연한 그들은 뼈를 깎는 연습을 통해 환상적인 퍼포먼스와 라이브가 접목된 새로운 모습을 매주 선보였고, 많은 이들의 예상을 깨고 우승 후보들을 연달아 격파하며 검색 순위 1위에 랭크되기도 했다. 특히, 지난 날의 어려웠던 시절을 회상함과 동시에 비보이들을 바라보는 대중들의 현실을 고백하는 모습에서는 따뜻한 감동을 전해주기도 했다. 


지난 가을부터 지금까지 맥시멈 크루는 한시도 여유를 찾아볼 수 없었다. 2개월에 걸친 일본 투어, 경주 문화 엑스포 공연, 태국에서의 싱글 음반 발매, 뉴욕에서 이루어진 환경보호 퍼포먼스 CARE 공연, 일본, 홍콩, 베트남 등 끝도 없이 밀려드는 국내외 활동을 소화하며 1년 하고도 3개월 만에 드디어 미니앨범 [삐에로]를 가지고 대중들 앞에 서기에 이르렀다.


소포모어 징크스, 그리고 비보이의 한계를 뛰어넘는 ‘표현력의 확장’
첫 번째 싱글을 발매하던 당시의 계획은 ‘수개월 내에 새로운 음반을 발표하며 활동을 이어나가자’라는 빠른 행보에 초점이 맞춰져 있었다. 하지만, 해외 장기 공연으로 인한 스케쥴 조절의 어려움과 녹음을 거듭할수록 생겨나는 욕심으로 인하여 맥시멈 크루의 음반 작업은 답보 상태에 빠지게 됐다. 특히, ‘비보이 출신이라는 태생적 장점은 곧 한계’라는 ‘벽 아닌 벽‘을 모두 뛰어 넘어야겠다는 일념을 갖게 되면서 고민과 부담감은 더욱 커져만 갔다. 


첫 싱글의 활동을 통해 ‘비보이의 정체성과 열정, 화려한 모습들을 대중에게 알리자’라던 애초의 의도는 정확히 맞아떨어졌음에도 불구하고, 활동이 계속될수록 비보이의 동작을 가미한 가수라는 외형적인 이미지 외에 정통한 무언가를 보여줄 필요가 있었다. 그렇기에 이번 미니앨범에서는 ‘아니 또 비보이 컨셉이야?’라는 대중들의 일반적인 예측을 깨뜨려야 한다는 또 다른 과제가 멤버들의 생각 가운데 인식되기 시작한 것이다. 그리고 이는 비보이 맥시멈의 모습에서 이미 시작되고 있었다.


일반적인 비보이 팀들이 개인기에 기반한 화려한 동작만을 추구할 때 맥시멈 크루는 멤버들의 호흡과 역할을 중요시 하며, 퍼포먼스의 완성도와 메시지의 전달에 더욱 비중을 두는 팀 컬러로 변화하게 됐고, 또한 랩의 완성도에 있어서도 첫 싱글과는 다르게 조금 더 다양한 주제와 소재, 그리고 유려함과 자연스러움에 초점을 두기 시작한 것이다. 맥시멈의 이러한 ‘표현력의 확장’은 이미 비보이 씬에서도 새로운 대안으로 각광받고 있었다.


그 결과 미니앨범 [삐에로]에서는 몇 가지 달라진 점을 감지할 수 있다. 우선, 원래 5인조 편성이던 맥시멈 크루의 음반 활동 팀을 미키(Mickey), 웨이크업(Wake up), 타조(Tazo) 등 3명의 정예 멤버로 완성하게 됐으며, 비보이 팀으로서 여러 퍼포먼스와 배틀 대회에 출전하면서 유지해 왔던 맥시멈 크루의 이름을 더욱 당당하게 내걸고, 가요계에 있어서도 보다 열정적인 활동을 펼치기로 한 것이다.


새롭게 다시 도전하는 맥시멈 크루의 변신, 타이틀곡 ‘삐에로’
작년에 발매된 첫 싱글 [To The Maximum]이 다소 투박하지만 열정과 투혼이 느껴지는 이미지였다면, 이번 미니앨범에서는 보다 친숙하면서도 자연스러움을 드러내고자 노력을 기울였다. 


오랜 시간 공들여서 작업한 타이틀곡 ‘삐에로’는 업그레이드된 맥시멈 크루를 느낄 수 있는 곡. 새로운 비보잉을 위해서 밤을 설쳐가며 연습에 땀을 흘렸던 그들은 지난 여름을 레코딩 스튜디오에서 보내며, 업그레이드되는 자신들의 랩 실력을 위해 최선을 다했다. 그리고, 그 결과물로 당당하게 내보낼 수 있는 타이틀곡을 발표할 수 있게 되었다. ‘Y(Tell me why)’와 ‘Hey DJ’ 등의 곡을 통해 음원 시장을 강타하였던 “프리스타일”이 프로듀서로 참여하여 맥시멈의 업그레이드를 감독했고, SBS드라마 ‘온에어’의 ‘체리’로 연기자로 거듭난 ‘슈가’ 출신의 한예원이 피쳐링을 맡아 음악성과 대중성을 고루 갖추어 비보이적인 색채를 배제한 채, 잊혀진 사랑 앞에 말없이 바라만 봐야 하는 슬픈 마음과 풍부한 감정을 담아냈다. 


세련된 전자 사운드와 반복적인 피아노 터치를 앞세워 힙합과 하우스의 묘한 조화를 이뤄낸 ‘바보야’는 이미 힙합 씬을 중심으로 커다란 지지를 얻고 있는 실력파 프로듀서 리얼드리머의 모던한 작법이 돋보이는 곡. 첫 번째 싱글 이후 일취월장한 리듬감을 보여주는 맥시멈의 랩핑과 더불어 사랑에 빠져 바보가 된 남자의 솔직한 감정을 표현한 가사가 쉽게 공감할 만하다. 여성 보컬 피쳐링에는 드라마 ‘그 남자의 여자’ OST 작업을 통해 알려진 정현이 참여하여 곡을 더욱 풍성하게 하고 있다.


타이틀 곡인 ‘삐에로’와 ‘바보야’의 음악적 변신을 통해 맥시멈의 새로운 가능성을 보여줬다면, 또 다른 트랙들은 이들의 근간을 이루고 있는 비보잉을 충분히 담아냄과 동시에 아이덴티티를 증명하고 있다. ‘To The Maximum’의 속편격인 ‘To The Maximum pt.2’는 비보이들을 위한 찬가. 파워풀한 사운드와 거친 랩핑을 바탕으로 소울사이어티(Soulciety)와 소울맨 앤 마이노스(Soulman & Minos) 등의 프로젝트를 통해 놀라운 가창력을 선보인 소울맨(soulman)이 참여하여 음악적인 면모를 더하였다. 지난 싱글의 프로듀서였던 택틱스(Tactics)와 버벌진트(Verbal Jint)가 다시 한 번 뭉쳐 만들어낸 곡으로 아프로 소울 밴드 세렝게티(Serengeti)와 홍대 최고의 힙합 DJ 스케줄원(Schedule 1)의 세션은 다이나믹한 사운드를 만드는 데 충분히 일조하고 있다.


한국 DJ의 역사라 불리는 DJ 렉스(Wreckx)가 맥시멈의 멤버인 웨이크업(Wake up)을 위해 만든 트랙 ‘Wake Up's Reaction’은 비보이들의 퍼포먼스를 위한 비트이다. 평소 연습실과 공연을 통해 웨이크업의 독창적인 퍼포먼스를 눈여겨본 렉스가 그의 비보잉을 강한 비트로 표현해낸 것. 또 다른 수록곡인 ‘Break 101’은 비보잉에 대한 역사를 랩으로 풀어낸 이색적인 트랙. 올드 스쿨 비트를 기초로 한 버벌진트의 프로듀싱 위에 비보잉의 A to Z를 위트 섞인 랩과 선배들에 대한 존경의 감정을 담아 채워놓은 곡이다.

Requirements
Please take into consideration that we only accept qualifying returns but not exchanges.
Refunds are issued once the returned products clear our inspection.

An item is eligible for cancellation if :

- you posted a Return request within 24 hours of payment and your order is still under “Pending” status
(if your order is under “Queued for Shipment” status, please contact our customer service center) OR
- the order is delayed for more than 10 days since payment and you have not received any notification regarding the delay OR
- the ordered item is out of stock.

We accept return(s) if :

- you receive a product different from your order OR
- you receive a defective product.

① Post a return request on our Return forum within three days of receipt. You are required to attach the photos of the received product(s) and include the item code, the order number, and the reason for the return.
② A customer service representative will be in contact to assist you by email or phone.
③ Items returned must be in their original condition, which includes tags and any packaging. Also, you need to include a note of your order number, name, and user ID.

Please be advised that returns are accepted ONLY IF you followed the instructions above and your return request has been approved by our staff. Returns that are shipped to us without any prior consent are not accepted.
Please note that EVEN the defective/incorrect item(s) must be returned with all of the tags and labels intact. The item(s) must be sent in their original packaging and unworn.
Please include all contents of the original package and free gifts (if applicable) in your return packaging.
Shipping fee for any return caused by our fault will be paid by the company. However, if EMS’ cash on delivery is not possible then you can scan the return receipt and either mail it with the item to return or post an image of it on the forum.
