로큰롤라디오의 새 앨범 “Life is a dream, We'll wake up and scream“ 첫 곡 'Feel Me'에서 김내현의 목소리가 들려올 때 로큰롤 라디오의 새로운 음반이 나온다는 걸 실감할 수 있었다. 로큰롤 라디오란 팀이 처음 등장했을 때부터 보컬리스트 김내현의 목소리에 대한 호불호가 있었지만 난 오랜 시간 그 목소리를 지지해왔다. 무엇보다 한국에서 그런 매력적인 중저음을 찾기가 어려웠다. 'Feel Me'에서 김내현의 목소리는 더 안정적으로 변했으며 사운드와 완전하게 조응하고 있다. 이제 김내현의 목소리가 없는 로큰롤 라디오를 상상하기는 어렵다. 어디 그뿐일까. 특유의 톤과 간결한 프레이즈만으로도 누가 쳤는지를 짐작할 수 있을 김진규의 기타 연주가 있다. 처음 로큰롤 라디오를 봤을 때부터 자연스레 눈길이 가던 그의 기타 연주는 여전히 로큰롤 라디오 사운드의 선봉이 돼 곡을 이끈다. 이민우(베이스)와 최민규(드럼)의 리듬 섹션은 '닥치고 춤이나 춰'야 하는 로큰롤 라디오의 음악에서 가장 중요한 핵심이다. 말하자면 넷의 조합은 이제 하나하나가 로큰롤 라디오에서 빠질 수 없는 역할을 하고 있다는 것이고, 시간이 더해질수록 더 견고해지는 밴드가 되어가고 있다는 것이다. 작년 로큰롤 라디오는 '여인아'란 신곡을 발표했다. 무형문화유산인 해녀를 잊지 말고 기념하자는 뜻에서 만든 컴필레이션 음반 [해녀, 이름을 잇다]에 수록한 곡이다. 이들은 이 곡에서 후반부로 갈수록 스케일이 커지는 웅장한 스타디움 록을 만들고자 했다. 인디 20주년을 기념한 앨범 [인디 20]에 수록한 'Dear Prudence'는 사이키델릭 스타일의 몽환적인 분위기를 강조했다. '로큰롤 라디오'란 이름을 떠올릴 때 대략 연상되는 음악들이 있다. 'Shut Up & Dance'로 대표되는 적당히 춤추기도 좋고 몸을 흔들기도 좋은 노래들. 하지만 이들은 이처럼 계속해서 자신들이 갖고 있는 것 안에서 할 수 있는 다양한 스타일의 곡들을 만들고 합주해왔다. 파격적이라 할 만한 것도 아니고 '변신'이라고 부를 만한 성질의 것도 아니다. 하지만 이런 변화들은 밴드에게나 오랜 시간 로큰롤 라디오의 음악을 들어온 이들에게나 새로운 활력소가 된다. 시간이 갈수록 이들의 지향점은 점점 더 명확해진다. '여인아'와 'Dear Prudence'에서 확인할 수 있듯 더 '록 밴드'다워지는 것이다. 그 여정 위에서 'Feel Me'가 만들어졌고, 계속해서 해외타진을 해오던 밴드에게 프랑스의 그레고리 루이스(Gregory Louis)와 모조(Modjo) 출신의 로맹 트란샤르(Romain Tranchart)가 프로듀서로 참여하게 됐다. 그레고리와 로맹이 로큰롤 라디오의 음악을 듣고 한 말은 "디스코풍의 음악에 데이빗 보위스러운 무드가 재미있다"는 것. 'Feel Me'와 'Nightmare'는 로큰롤 라디오가 지금껏 해온 모든 스타일이 축약되어있는 곡들이다. 로킹한 면이 있으면서도 그루브는 살아있다. 멜로디는 선명하고, 리듬은 각종 의태어를 갖다 붙이고 싶을 만큼 생생하게 살아 꿈틀대는 것 같다. 하나인 듯하면서도 기타와 베이스, 드럼 각각의 소리가 이처럼 또렷하게 들리는 건 그만큼 사운드의 톤을 잡는데 많은 공을 들였다는 의미이기도 하다. 나는 이들에게 과거에 "영민하다"는 표현을 한 적이 있는데, DJ 출신의 프로듀서들에게 어떤 곡이 가장 큰 효과를 거둘 수 있을 것인지 이번에도 영민한 선택을 했다. 'Feel Me'와 'Shut Up & Dance'의 리믹스를 들으며 이들이 갖고 있는 가능성이 기대보다도 더 크고 넓을 수 있다는 생각을 했다. 그레고리와 로맹이 했다는 "디스코풍의 음악에 데이빗 보위스러운 무드가 재미있다"는 소감도 그런 가능성 가운데 하나일 것이다. 이들은 사람들을 춤추게 할 수도 있고, 무드에 젖게 할 수도 있고, 로킹한 싱글에 열광하게 할 수도 있다. 더 고무적인 건 이런 다양한 스타일 안에서도 '로큰롤 라디오스럽다'는 것은 변함이 없다는 것이다. 밴드는 이제 중심은 흔들리지 않으면서도 다양한 표정을 지을 수 있게 됐다. 여전히 길게 뻗어있는 밴드의 도정(道程) 위에서 이들은 더 다양한 스타일을 선보일 것이고, 많은 선택을 할 것이다. 그리고, 지금까지 그랬던 것처럼 그 선택의 방향은 현명하고 긍정적일 것이다.
