01. 우리 애인 02. 두 그림자 03. 그 소녀 04. 안녕을 하면 05. 인생을 06. 고아 07. 당신 08. 헤어질 때 09. 이 거리 오세은은 포크 싱어송라이터로써, 연주 및 작곡 능력을 겸비하였으며, 다른 가수의 음반에도 연주나 작곡, 프로듀싱으로 영향을 미친 몇 안 되는 뮤지션이다. 1972년의 데뷔 음반 [오세은 스테레오 선곡집]은 어쿠스틱한 분위기의 포크 음반이다. 반면 1973년 2집 음반 [오세은의 노래모음]은 5인조 그룹 편성의 블루지한 록 감각이 실린 앨범이다. 이러한 포크적(어쿠스틱한) 면모와 그룹사운드적(일렉트릭한) 면모는 1974년 3집 [우리 애인/고아]에서 보다 잘 조화되어 나타난다. 오세은의 3집 앨범이 발표된 지 30년이 흐른 지금, 100만원을 호가하는 고가의 컬렉터스 아이템이 된 것은, 단순히 앨범의 수량적 희소성 때문만은 아닐 것이다. 물론 이 음반이 불운의 희귀 앨범이 된 것은 “고아”가 ‘지나친 비정, 불신감 조장’이라는 명목 하에 금지되었기 때문이기도 하다. 30년 만에 빛을 보게 된 문제작 중의 문제작 오세은은 포크 싱어송라이터로써, 연주 및 작곡 능력을 겸비하였으며, 다른 가수의 음반에도 연주나 작곡, 프로듀싱으로 영향을 미친 몇 안 되는 뮤지션이다. 1967년부터 72년경 성균관대학교 재학 시절 동안 미8군 및 이태원의 클럽 등지에서 기타와 보컬리스트로 ‘그룹’ 활동(아이돌스, 플라워스, 영 바이블스, 라이더스, 메가톤스 등이다)을 했고 이후 솔로 가수로 활동하게 된다. 또한 서성원(메가톤스 출신)이 멤버로 있던 딕 훼밀리의 히트곡 “또 만나요”(한때를 풍미했던 고고클럽, 나이트클럽의 엔딩송)도 오세은의 작곡이며, 윤연선(1975), 김인순(1974), 그리고 남궁옥분(1984), 신형원(1987) 등의 음반 등에 작곡 혹은 편곡을 해 준 바 있다. 이정선, 원플러스원, 바블껌 등의 음반에는 그의 기타 연주 솜씨도 실려 있다. 기획 제작자 혹은 프로듀서 역할을 하기도 했는데, 특히 한영애의 잘 알려지지 않은 초기의 비공식 음반 2집 [작은 동산](1978) 및 [여울목](1985)도 그의 손길이 닿은 앨범들이다. 오세은의 솔로 앨범들을 간략히 살펴보자. 1972년의 데뷔 음반 [오세은 스테레오 선곡집(그날이 오면/친구야)]는 어쿠스틱한 분위기의 포크 음반이다. 반면 1973년 2집 음반 [오세은의 노래모음(행복한 마음/당신을 처음 보았을 때)]는 5인조 그룹 편성의 블루지한 록 감각이 실린 앨범이다. 이러한 포크적(어쿠스틱한) 면모와 그룹사운드적(일렉트릭한) 면모는 1974년 3집 [우리 애인/고아]에서 보다 잘 조화되어 나타난다. 오세은의 3집 앨범이 발표된 지 30년이 흐른 지금, 고가의 컬렉팅 아이템이 된 것은, 단순히 앨범의 수량적 희소성 때문만은 아닐 것이다. 물론 이 음반이 희귀 앨범이 된 것은 “고아”가 ‘지나친 비정, 불신감 조장’이라는 명목 하에 금지되었기 때문이기도 하다. 또한 이색적인 앨범 커버는 녹음실에 있던 프랑스 여가수의 대형 사진을 배경으로 삼아 찍은 것이다. 앨범 수록곡 대부분은 포크적 분위기 위주로 일렉트로닉한 감각이 살짝 덧씌워지고 있다. 일렉트릭 기타와 어쿠스틱 기타가 배킹과 솔로를 담당하는 방식으로 오세은의 다채로운 기타 사운드가 투영되고 있는 것이다. 간간히 플루트나 현악기, 오르간을 비롯해 배킹 보컬로 양념을 치면서... 특히 당시 문제의 곡이었던 “고아”는 끌로드 제롬(Claude Jerome)의 샹송(“L'orphelin”)을 번안한 곡이다. 오세은의 곡이 흔히 기타가 주도하는 데 반해, 이 곡은 피아노의 아르페지오 반주가 두드러지는 슬로 템포 3박자의 비가(悲歌)다. 여기에 현악기의 단아한 선율, 아련하면서도 비감한 여성 코러스, 간간히 뿌려지는 플루트 연주가 어우러진다. 이와 같은 슬픈 연가가 이 앨범의 주종을 이루는데 그 중 숨은 명곡은 “당신”이다. 당시로서는(물론 지금도) 흔하지 않은 긴 시간대(8분 30초)의 곡으로, 벤딩과 하모닉스 위주로 구성된 기타 솔로의 우수 어린 전주가 2분 가까이 진행되고 나서야 노래가 흐른다. 이후에는 블루스 풍으로 전개되는데, 고백의 심정을 담담하게 읊조리는 방식은 포크적이라 할 만하다. 피아노 솔로와 기타 배킹 연주가 입혀지고 오세은 본인의 코러스와 고음의 여성 코러스가 덧붙여지면서 블루지한 감각이 실려 있다. 그밖에, 기대감을 일으키는 드러밍으로 시작하는 “두 그림자”나, 예의 플루트와 현악기 인스트루멘테이션의 “안녕을 하면” 역시 일렉트릭한 면모가 첨가되면서 주요 정서인 애련한 감정을 전달하고 있다. 한편으로는 밝고 명랑한 곡도 있다. 미드 템포의 포크 록 “우리 애인”이 그런 곡으로, 기타 두 대와 베이스 기타의 조화가 전면에, 플루트의 희미한 음영이 후면에 깔리며 연인에 대한 묘사가 등장한다. 어쿠스틱 기타의 차분한 시정이 돋보이는 “그 소녀”의 경우는 윤연선의 음반에 “그 소년”(소녀를 소년으로 개사)으로 수록된 바 있다. 오세은의 증언에 의하면 음반사가 원래 수록되기로 한 다른 곡을 빼고 1집에 수록된 바 있는 “인생을”과 “이 거리”를 그 자리에 넣었다. “인생을”은 인생과 사랑에 대한 존재론적 질문을 던지고 있고, “이 거리”는 하모니카와 기타가 어우러지는 가운데 “사랑하는 이 거리에 오늘도 내일도 살아가리라 / 나 살고 있는 이 거리에 영광과 행복의 빛이 있겠지”라는 쓸쓸한 소망을 담고 있다. 이 노래처럼 3집 발표 후 인생과 음악의 길을 떠나는 그의 여정은 음악의 뿌리(한국전통음악 및 블루그래스)에 대한 모색과 전환의 여행으로 향하게 된다.
