01. 가시리 02. 꽃타령 03. 뱃노래 04. 희망가 05. 사의 찬미 06. 목포의 눈물 07. 새야새야 08. 찔레꽃 09. 몽금포타령 재즈보컬리스트 남예지 4집 앨범 <오래된 노래, 틈> 오늘날까지 흘러온 옛 노래들을 좋아합니다. 특히 한국 초기 가요와 그 시대적 배경에 관심이 있었습니다. 초기 가요 중에는 당시 미국에서 유행하던 스윙 재즈의 영향을 받은 곡들도 있었어요. 특히 '조선 재즈의 귀재'라 불리던 김해송의 <청춘계급 (1938)>이나 손목인의 번안곡 <싱싱싱 (1939)>을 들었을 때의 놀라움은 아직도 생생합니다. 일제 강점기의 신문 및 잡지에서 재즈 관련 기사들을 찾아보기 시작했습니다. 1928년 7월 중외일보에 실린 재즈밴드란 과연 무엇인가에 관한 글과 역시 중외일보 1928년 8월에 실린 '코리안 재즈밴드'의 전국 순회공연 기사들, 1930년 신민(新民)이라는 잡지에 실린 재즈밴드의 기원에 관한 글, 1936년 조선일보에 실린 음반사 주최의 재즈 콘서트에 관한 기사, 1938년 2월 조선일보에 실린 홍난파의 재즈 음악에 관한 비평, 1938년 3월 동아일보에 실린 재즈 뮤지션 베니 굿맨과 관련된 당시 미국 재즈계의 소식 등 흥미로운 텍스트를 다수 발견했어요(남예지, 「일제 강점기 한국 초기 재즈에 관한 연구-1927년부터 1940년 사이 신문·잡지 텍스트를 중심으로」, 『대중음악』 통권 33호, 2024. 참조). 재즈 관련 글들은 1940년 이후 “쨔즈 音樂(음악)에 鐵槌(철퇴), 왈쯔도 嚴重制限(엄중제한), 레코-드 音樂(음악)을 淨化(정화) (조선일보, 1940년)”, “째스 音樂禁止(음악금지), 레코드 音樂(음악)도 淨化(정화) (동아일보, 1940년)”라는 기사들과 함께 지면에서 사라집니다. 이는 일본이 당시 적성국이었던 미국의 음악이라는 이유로 국내에 재즈 음악 금지령을 내렸기 때문이라는 사실을 알게 되었을 때, 상상력이 발동했어요. 이후 한국에서 재즈가 다시 나타나는 것은 1950년대 한국 전쟁으로 국내에 주둔했던 미군들의 쇼 무대를 통해서 였는데요, 이러한 공백이 없었다면 오늘날 우리가 재즈를 향유하는 방식이 조금은 다르지 않았을까요? 1920년대에 국내로 들어온 재즈는 1930년대를 거치면서 <청춘계급>이나 <싱싱싱>처럼 우리 대중음악에 자연스럽게 스며드는 중이었거든요. 변화의 흐름이 단절되지 않았더라면 아마도 오늘의 우리는 재즈라는 음악을 좀 더 가깝게 느끼지 않았을까요? 한국 재즈 스탠더드라 할 수 있는 음악들도 생겨나지 않았을까요? 상상은 음악이 되었습니다. 어쩌면 오래된 노래의 틈 속에 존재했을지 모를, 익숙하고도 낯선 음악이 여기에 있습니다.
