TRACK LIST [CREDIT] 01 .Protocol 나는 생계를 위해 밝은 나를 만들어 수 없이 많은 프로토콜을 가동했다. 02. Expansion 내가 앓고 있는 병에 관한 이야기다. 이는 사람을 기피하게 되고 가슴이 조여오며 나를 깊은 곳으로 가두었다. 이것은 점점 확장되어 나를 여러 번 죽음 앞에 다가가게 했다. 03. Vivid 순간순간이 너무나도 생생했다. 음악에 모든 걸 쏟아내고 열정을 불태우던 시기가 있었다. 누군가 내 노래를 듣고 좋았다며 편지를 써주기도 했다. 나는 다시 돌아갈 수 있을까? 04. Ralos 불면증으로 잠을 이루지 못하며 새벽에 뜨는 해를 누워있는 시점에서 거꾸로 보며 'Solar'라는 재즈 스탠다드를 거꾸로 뒤집어보았다. 05. Undefined 음악은 뭔가 나에게 있어서 정의 할 수 없는 무언가다. 나에게 기쁨을 주기도 했지만 나의 모든 것을 빼앗기도 했다. 정말 알 수 없다. 06. Time 나는 어려서 부터 펑크, 락, 메탈 등을 듣고 자랐다. 처음 기타를 잡은 후, 기타 입시를 시작했을 때는 락커 성향에 가까웠다. 그래서 내 음악의 본질적인 면을 찾아 락을 한 곡 수록해보면 어떨까 했다. 그런데 재즈에 너무 깊은 뿌리를 내린 걸까? 알 수 없는 변박의 락도 아닌 재즈도 아닌 곡이 탄생했다. 생각해 보면 이 지점이, 지금 나의 모습을 보여주는 것이 아닌가 싶다. 07. Moderation 많은 사람들이 내게 왜이리 곡들이 난해한지 묻곤 한다. 이해를 돕기 위해 항상 크레딧에 빼곡하게 곡에 대한 설명을 한다. 대중성이 없다는 것, 내 음악만으로는 먹고 살 수 없다는 것을 뜻한다. 그래서 나는 매일 절제하기로 마음을 먹는다. 이 감정을 절제된 노트로 풀어본 곡이다. 08. Zealot 나는 음악의 광신도였다. 한 때, 지금보다 더 어린 나이에, 처음 필드로 나왔을 때, 이제 막 첫 발을 내딛는 거니까 라는 믿음을 가지고 아낌없이 시간과 물질을 바쳤다. 하지만 머지않아 이는 나를 어두운 구렁텅이에 빠지게 했으며 현실을 맞보게 해 주었다. 나는 좌절했고 음악을 기피하기 시작했다. 09. BLUE 2019년도 한창 활동 많이 하던 시기에 썼던 곡이다. 파란색을 상상하면서 쓴 곡이고 파랑이 주는 여러 의미에 따라 다른 해석을 하게끔 쓴 곡이다. -부서질 듯 찬란한 아름다움이 있다. 그건 눈부신 태양처럼 빛나기도 했고 칠흑처럼 검고 깊어 바닥을 가늠할 수 없기도 했다. 생의 가장 험난했던 부분을 떼어놓은 것처럼 폭풍우 쳤고 파도처럼 밀려들었다가 빠져나간 후에는 모두 사라져버린 것처럼 고요했다. 그 앞에선 압도 당할 수 밖에 없었고 이내 눈물이 맺혔다. 어디서 기인하는 슬픔인지는 알 수 없었다. 그런 이유로 누군가는 달아났고 누군가는 그 자리에 얼어붙었다. 저마다 부르는 방법도 달랐다. 어떤 이는 가장 악독했던 사람의 이름을 붙였고 어떤 이는 세상의 모든 형용사를 가져온다 하더라도 표현할 수 없을 거라고 했다. 찬란한 아름다움이란 그런 것이었다. 임호연 2집 [Salvation]은 음악이 가진 아름다움에 사로잡힌 사람의 기록이다. 다가가면 다가갈수록 타올라 재가 되어버리는 태양처럼 그는 지나치게 매료되었기 때문에 괴로웠다. 삶의 수많은 괴리들이 만들어낸 간극은 어긋난 것처럼 보이는 음과 음으로, 그 사이를 메우기 위해 했던 부단한 노력들은 호흡과 여백으로 표현했다. 첫 번째 트랙 'Protocol'은 비정형과 정형, 그 사이에 있다. 반복되지만 반복되지 않은 것처럼 들리는 음의 집합은 동일한 듯 동일하지 않은 일상을 살고 있는 우리 자신이며, 끊임없이 어딘가를 향해 달려가는 변주는 어떤 하루의 끝처럼 위태롭다. 이어지는 트랙이자 타이틀곡이기도 한 'Expansion'은 어둠에 가깝다. 처음 마주했을 때는 작고 가벼웠던 그것은 어느새 날카롭게 변해 생채기를 내고 숨을 내쉴 수 없을 만큼 깊게 폐부를 파고든다. 선명한 선 하나의 움직임을 보는 듯한 세 번째 트랙 'Vivid'. 기타 리프를 따라 선은 곡선을 그리기도, 끊어질 것처럼 밭은 숨을 내쉬기도 했다가 이내 선명한 그림을 그려낸다. 완성된 그림은 종전의 일처럼 생생하지만 너무 생경해서 다가갈 수 없다. 네 번째 트랙에 'Ralos'에 이르면 불규칙하고 예측 불가한 형태로 선은 존재한다. 어디서 튀어나올지 모르는 음의 결합은 통제 불가능하고 물리적인 충격으로 다가온다. 이어지는 트랙 'Undefined'는 무언가에 의해 휩쓸려 버린 세계 위에 홀로 남은 사람과도 같다. 불안과 두려움, 환상처럼 불확실해 보이는 풍경들, 희망이라는 것이 남아있을까 싶은 막막함. 삶의 궤도에 다시 오르려면 어떻게 해야할까, 질문이 앞선다. 여섯 번째 트랙 'Time'에 다다르면 경계가 보인다. 어디에도 속하지 못한 채 경계에 서 있는 그는 끊임없이 자기 자신에게 질문을 던진다. 그리고 모든 이들이 그에게 묻는다. 너는 누구냐고. 하지만 제대로 대답할 수 없다. 어쩌면 이어지는 트랙 'Moderation'은 앞선 트랙에 대한 답일지도 모른다. 경계에 선 채 가고 싶은 길이 아니라 가야만 한다고 여기기에 갈 수 밖에 없는 길을 걷고 있는 사람의 모습이 떠오른다. 그에겐 쓸쓸함과 외로움만이 남아 있다. 그렇게 생애 가장 사랑했던 것은 그를 가장 쉽게 파괴했다. 여덟 번째 트랙 'Zealot'이다. 마지막 트랙 'BLUE'는 모든 것이 끝나고 가장 아름답게 일렁이는 파도다. 속을 내비쳐 보이기도, 깊이 들어가면 들어갈수록 아득해 다시 헤어나오지 못할 것만 같은 두려움에 휩싸이게 만드는 그런 파랑과 파도. |
