Historians 00:03:56 암흑의 시대, 진실을 담아 노래하는 심연의 목소리 루시 데이커스의 2번째 앨범. 대학에서 영화를 공부한 루시 데이커스는 낮에는 사진 현상소에서 일하고 금요일 밤에는 러시아 소설을 읽으며 시간을 죽이는 것을 좋아하는 소녀였다. 그리고 2015년 어느 날 버클리 음대 출신 엔지니어이자 그녀의 친구인 콜린 패스토레(Collin Pastore)와 함께 내쉬빌에서 데뷔 앨범 [No Burden]을 녹음한다. 21세의 나이에 완성한 이 성숙한 데뷔작을 통해 피치포크(Pitchfork)에서 7.8점을 받았고 2016년 1월호 롤링 스톤(Rolling Stone)지에는 '반드시 들어야 하는 10명의 신인 아티스트'로 꼽히기도 했다. 페이더(The Fader)에서는 지금까지 들어본 적 없는 아름다운 목소리라 환호했다. 본 작은 인디 명문 마타도어(Matador)에서 내놓은 두번째 앨범이다. 전작과 마찬가지로 내쉬빌에서 콜린 패스토레의 프로듀스 아래 녹음이 진행됐다. 소포모어 앨범 [Historian]은 상쾌한 깨달음, 눈물 어린 선언, 그리고 힘들게 얻은 평화의 순간 등으로 채워내고 있다. 무엇보다 스스로가 이번 앨범을 두고 자신이 만들었어야만 하는 앨범이라 밝히고 있다. 강렬한 보컬의 'Night Shift'는 그녀가 처음으로 쓴 이별 노래이다. 고요하게 시작해 점차 강도를 올려가는 곡은 마치 90년대 얼터너티브 트랙처럼 마무리 된다. 이 아름다운 트랙은 루시 데이커스의 탁월한 송라이팅 감각이 새로운 수준에 도달해냈음을 인지시켜낸다. “새로운 연인에게 헌정한다”는 곡의 마지막 가사는 일말의 희망을 품고 있는 듯 비춰지기도 한다. 지난 1년 동안 미국은 재난과도 같은 선거결과로 인해 많은 사람들이 고통 받아왔다. 루시 데이커스 역시 마찬가지였다. 결국 그녀는 '사학자(Historian)'의 관점에서 사려 깊은 서사를 이번 앨범에 풀어내면서 역경에 직면한 신중한 낙관주의적 컨셉을 완수해냈다. |
