Club 706 (5:20) 2. 강남어린이 (6:06) 3. 예배당 가던길 (6:44) 4. 남겨진 사람들 (4:34) 최초 LP 발매 정원영 2집 [Mr. Moonlight] 뮤지션 정원영의 초기 명반인 2집 [Mr. Moonlight]이 최초로 LP 발매됐다. 1995년 본격적인 CD 시대에 발매된 이 음반은 당시 CD와 카세트로만 출시돼 많은 팬이 바이닐 발매를 원했었는데 근 30년 만에 드디어 숙원을 이루게 됐다. 정원영 2집 [Mr. Moonlight]은 보컬 트랙이 많아 기존 가요 음반과 궤를 같이하는 1집 [가버린 날들]과 달리 퓨전재즈 성향이 강하고 작곡가, 연주자 정원영이 부각되는 앨범이다. 물론 대중적으로 많이 알려졌고 정원영 최대 히트곡이라 할만한 ‘다시 시작해’, 나중에 장필순의 커버로 인기를 모은 ‘강남 어린이’와 마지막 트랙 ‘남겨진 사람들’처럼 보컬 트랙도 포함돼 있지만 나머지 곡들은 연주곡들이다. 버클리 1세대로 불리며 국내 대중음악가중에 가장 먼저 외국에서 수학한 인물 중 한 명인 정원영이 재즈 본고장에서 갈고 닦으며 익힌 음악을 유감없이 발휘한 음반이다. 여기 실린 곡들이 90년대 초중반 당시 정원영이 가장 하고 싶었던 음악이 아니었을까 한다. 훵키(funky)한 리듬과 유려한 앙상블로 퓨전재즈의 본령을 들려주는 곡들과 어쿠스틱 피아노의 서정적인 곡들이 잘 어우러져 음반 전체의 흐름과 구성이 매끄럽게 진행된다. 48분이 넘는 짧지 않은 러닝타임이지만 듣는 재미가 쏠쏠해서 순식간에 앨범이 끝난다. 전곡을 작사, 작곡한 정원영의 뛰어난 창작력, 연주자로서의 탁월함에 더해 초호화 게스트/세션 뮤지션의 참여가 음반을 더욱 풍성하게 한다. 조동익, 한상원, 송홍섭, 유정연, 임재범, 김장훈, 신윤철, 김종진, 낯선 사람들 등등. 모두 한국음악계의 거목이라 할 수 있는 인물들이 줄줄이 등장해서 넘치거나 모자람 없이 곡에 딱 맞는 적절한 연주와 노래를 선보인다. 어느 뮤지션이 어느 부분에 등장해서 어떤 연주를 들려주는지 체크해 가며 듣는 것도 아주 즐거운 감상법이 될 수 있겠다. 이 LP는 CD와 카세트와는 음반 커버가 다르다. 정원영 얼굴 사진이 쓰인 오리지널 커버는 앨범 내부 부클릿에서 볼 수 있고 새로 정원영이 직접 그린 인상적인 자화상이 새 커버로 사용됐다. 그것도 흰색과 검은색 2가지 버전으로 출시돼 음반 수집가들에게 좋은 선물이 될 것이다. 정원석 (음악평론가) |
