나얼을 만든 음악 세계
그리고 나얼이 만들 음악 세계

80~90년대에 참 많은 흑인 음악들을 들었다. 도시적인 흑인 음악, 이른바 ‘Urban R&B’가 대세로 자리한 시기였다. 나얼 또한 당시 많은 흑인 음악을 들었을 것으로 짐작된다. 그의 솔로 작품들 대부분에서 80~90년대 R&B에 대한 언급을 찾을 수 있기 때문이다. 라디오 DJ로 시작해 현재 유튜브로 이어지고 있는 “나얼의 음악 세계”는 그의 당시 R&B에 대한 사랑을 잘 보여준다. 유튜브 채널에서만 100개 이상의 플레이리스트를 선보인 걸 생각하면 그가 엄선한 곡이 1000여 개에 달한다. 70~90년대 소울과 R&B가 대부분인 걸 생각하면 놀라운 작업이다. 더 놀라운 건 그 천여 곡이 보여주는 폭과 깊이다. “나음세” 초기 구독자로서 그의 레퍼토리들을 접하며 부끄러움을 느끼곤 했다. 같은 시대에 내가 들었던 R&B와 그가 소개하는 R&B와의 거리가 상당했기 때문이다. 메인 차트로 접한 히트곡이 아닌, 진짜 흑인들이 즐긴 ‘soul’ 가득한 명곡들이었다.

이번 “Soul Pop City”는 “나음세”의 연장선에 자리한 작품이다. 그가 소개했던 자신이 좋아하는 음악 스타일로 채운 조금은 매니악한 앨범이다. 그리고 자신의 서브 레이블인 “나음세 레코즈”를 알리는 새로운 시작이기도 하다. 70~90년대 소울, R&B 음악들을 “나음세 레코즈”를 통해 계속해서 발매해 나갈 예정이기 때문이다.

현대카드의 한정판 LP 제작 지원 프로젝트인 과 나얼의 가 협업하여 기획된 이번 앨범은 LP 형태로 발매된다. “나음세”의 시그널 송으로 이미 사용되고 있는 ‘Soul Pop City’가 1분 조금 넘는 연주곡인 걸 생각하면 A-Side의 ‘I Still Love You’, B-Side의 ‘1985’가 담긴 싱글이라고 볼 수 있다.

타이틀곡인 ‘I Still Love You’는 감성적인 EP 사운드와 잘 감기는 스무스한 훅(Hook)을 특징으로 한다. 한 시대를 풍미했던 90년대식 R&B의 전형을 보여주는 곡으로 70년대 소울 느낌을 더하고, 토크박스와 오버하임(Oberheim) DX 드럼머신을 써서 매력적인 90년대 R&B 넘버를 완성했다.

B-Side의 ‘1985’는 제목에서 알 수 있듯 1980년대의 음악과 문화에 대한 큰 애정을 담았다. 신스와 무그베이스를 탑재한 모던 소울과 모던 부기 사운드를 충실히 재현한 전형적인 80년대 소울 넘버로, 오버하임 DX와 시몬스 클랩 트랩(Simmons Clap Trap)을 사용해 80년대 리듬 사운드의 완성도를 높였다. 잽 앤 로저(Zapp & Roger)를 연상시키는 토크박스와 신들린듯한 기타 솔로가 곡의 백미를 장식한다.

자신의 이름이 담긴 새로운 레이블을 통해 앞으로 나얼이 만들어 갈 음악 세계는 어떻게 전개될까? 그 시작인 이번 앨범은 앞으로의 행보에 대한 기대를 만들기 충분하다. (글/대중음악 평론가 이용지)
