'새마을합창경연대회'의 지정곡, KBS 라디오의 ‘삼천만의 합창’의 시그널로 전 국민의 애창곡 <비둘기 집>, 당시 대중들에게 상당한 반응을 이끌어냈던 <두 마음>등 이석의 부드러운 음색과 지금 들어도 마음 편안하게 해주는 마력이 가득한 곡들로 채워져 있다면, B면을 장식하고 있는 맑고 청아한 목소리가 매력적인 신중현 사단출신의 임아영이 부른 MBC TV 드라마 주제가 <학부인>, <돌개바람>, <순아의 그림자>, 당시 섹시한 춤과 노래로 대활약을 했던 트리오 걸 그룹 허니비 시스터스의 화음과 음색이 매력적인 <종이로 만든 여자>가 수록된 이 음반은 개체수가 거의 없는 희귀앨범으로 자리하고 있다. 유일한 황손가수 이 석의 대표앨범 1970년대에 한상일의 <웨딩 드레스>와 더불어 결혼축가로 각광받았던 <비둘기 집>의 주인공 이석은 ‘황손가수’로 유명했다. 고종황제의 손자이자 의친왕의 열한 번째 아들인 그의 본명은 이해석이다. 그는 궁궐에서 성장했던 귀한 몸이었지만 대한제국의 몰락과 더불어 황족에서 평민으로 신분이 바뀌었다. 외교관의 꿈을 지녔던 그는 한국 외국어대 스페인어과에 진학했지만 빈곤했던 가정경제로 인해 학업을 계속하지 못했다. 이석이 음악과 인연을 맺은 것은 경동고 3학년 때 서울 종로2가에 소재했던 음악감상실 ‘뉴 월드’에서 개최한 크리스마스 노래자랑에서 <베사메 무초>를 불러 1등을 하면서부터이다. 그 곳에서 다양한 팝송을 멋들어지게 부르면서 노래실력이 입소문을 타면서 1962년 미8군 연예회사 ‘화양’의 오디션을 통과했다. 이후 A-Train Show단에 입단했던 그는 워커힐 호텔 ‘태평양클럽’에 출연했던 1964년에 데뷔음반을 발표하며 본격적인 활동을 시작했다. 1966년 주월 한국군 연예단의 일원으로 파병된 그는 현지에서 부상을 입어 1968년에 전역해 이듬해부터 1973년까지 꾸준하게 노래를 발표했다. 사실 이석의 대표곡 <비둘기 집>과 히트곡 <두 마음>은 남성듀엣 투에이스의 1기 멤버 오승근, 홍순백이 1969년에 먼저 취입했었다. 하지만 노래를 빅히트 시킨 것은 투에이스가 아닌 1971년 애플기획으로 유니버샬레코드에서 발표한 이석의 리메이크 버전이었다. 바로 음반번호가 ‘K-APPLE-53’인 이 앨범에 수록된 노래이다. 이석의 <비둘기 집>이 히트하면서 투에이스의 오리지널 버전은 다시 한 번 재발매되기도 했다. 이 시기에 발매된 애플기획 음반들의 발매 연월일은 복잡하다. 발매 번호가 앞선 음반이 늦은 번호의 음반보다 발매일이 늦게 표기된 경우가 많다. 이석의 사진을 재킷 커버로 사용한 이번에 재발매된 이 음반은 이석의 독집이 아니다. 신중현사단의 전설적인 여가수 임아영과 허니비씨스터스의 노래가 함께 수록된 컴필레이션 음반이다. 흥미로운 것은 이 음반보다 앞서 발매된 음반번호 ‘K-APPLE-49'인 허니비씨스터스와 임아영의 스플리트 음반 뒷면에 수록된 노래들과 이 음반 뒷면의 노래들은 트랙 순서까지 동일한 점이다. 임아영의 노래 <순아의 옛 그림자>만 이 음반에서 제목이 <순아의 그림자>로 수정되었다. 또한 중퇴를 했기에 앨범 뒷면에 ‘외국어대 서반아과 졸업’이란 표기는 오류이다. 커버를 장식한 이석의 노래들은 A면을 장식했다. 대부분 당시 유행했던 통기타 반주로 노래한 편안한 곡들이다. 황손가수라는 화제성에 잘 생긴 외모와 미성의 가수 이석은 김기웅 곡 <비둘기 집>으로 인해 스타덤에 올랐다. 당시는 새마을 운동으로 인해 각종 ‘건전가요’들이 위세를 떨쳤다. 건전한 내용의 가사인 <비둘기 집>은 새마을합창경연대회의 지정곡, KBS 라디오의 ‘삼천만의 합창’의 시그널로 채택되면서 전 국민의 애창가요가 되었다. <비둘기 집>에 이어 <두 마음>도 상당한 반응을 이끌어냈다. 음반 뒷면을 장식한 MBC TV 연속극 주제가인 임아영의 <학부인>도 상당히 귀한 노래이다. 1971년 전성기를 맞은 이석은 촉망 받는 신인여가수 이성애와 재킷 커버를 장식해 관심을 끌었다. 이후 <어머니>(71년), 외화「어둠 속에 벨이 울릴때」의 주제가 <안개>(1971년), <외로운 조약돌>(1972년), <차라리 돌이 되어>(1973년) 등으로 전성기를 누리게 된다. 인기가수로 대중의 사랑을 받았지만 보수적인 당시에 이석이 TV에서 노래하는 모습을 본 황실가족들은 ‘나라가 망하니, 황실의 후손이 광대가 됐다’며 한탄해 가수활동을 접게 된다. 더구나 군사정권의 배려로 삼청동의 ‘칠궁’에서 기거했던 황손가족들은 10.26사태 이후 궁 밖으로 내몰리면서 이석은 미국으로 홀연 이민을 떠났다. 이제는 황손가수 이석을 기억하는 대중은 많지 않을 것이다. 대중의 시야에서 사라진 그는 현지에서 정원사, 빌딩청소부, 경비원 등 온갖 일을 하면서 10년을 거주했다. 1989년 이방자 여사 장례식에 참석하러 귀국한 그는 미국 영주권을 포기하고 국적을 회복했지만 그 동안 9번이나 자살을 시도했을 정도로 사회생활에 쉽게 적응하지 못했다. 이후 이석은 전주 전통한옥에 기거하며 전주의 역사와 전통을 설명하는 문화유산 해설사로 변신했다. 거의 반세기 만에 재발매된 이석의 대표곡 <비둘기 집>이 수록된 이 음반은 수십만원을 호가하는 희귀앨범으로 둔갑했다. 개체수가 거의 없고 유일한 황손가수의 대표앨범이기 때문이다. 비록 빈궁했던 가족의 생계를 위해 시작했던 가수활동이었지만 유일한 황손가수로서 그의 존재는 기억할 필요가 있다. 이석이 남긴 노래에 대한 추억을 지닌 팬들에게 이 음반의 재발매는 반가운 선물이 될 것이다. 또한 유일한 황손가수의 존재와 그의 노래를 알지 못했던 젊은 세대들에게는 신선한 충격을 다가갈 것으로 기대된다. 황손가수라는 화제성을 떠나 그의 부드러운 음색은 지금 들어도 마음을 편안하게 해주는 마력이 있다. 최규성 대중문화평론가. 한국대중가요연구소 대표 |
