Wiegenlied 00:01:37 허정인 (JUNGIN HUH) Schubert & Brahms 슈베르트 & 브람스 THE UNSPOKEN LYRICISM DELIVERED BY CELLO 첼로가 전하는 무언의 시정 악기가 조야하여 조화로운 기악 앙상블을 이루기 어려웠던 시절은 생각보다 길었고, 사람들은 기악보다 성악을 더 본질적인 음악이라 여겼다. 보통 사람들이 만날 수 있는 여러 민속 악기들은 나름대로의 생명력을 지니고 있었지만 거칠었고 합주하기가 어려웠다. 몇몇 고상한 악기들은 값이 비싸서 교회나 궁정의 전유물이었다. 그러나 16세기에 이르러 이탈리아를 중심으로 바이올린 등의 현악기가 널리 퍼지면서 상황이 달라졌다. 활로 긋는 현악기들은 사람 목소리의 다채로운 표현을 재현하면서 그 한계까지도 뛰어넘을 수 있었다. 섬세하게 뉘앙스와 색채를 달리 하고, 사람 목소리의 음역이나 호흡을 훌쩍 벗어나 초절기교를 선보일 수 있게 되었다. 그러나 기악 음악은 여전히 성악을 닮고 싶어 했다. 기술적인 발전은 물론 음악사의 지형에 변화를 일으키는 중요한 사건이었지만, 그것만으로는 재주나 기예의 차원을 뛰어넘었기 때문이었다. 노래가 전하는 것과 같은 의미와 정신성을 어떻게 하면 전할 수 있을까. 작곡가들은 고민을 거듭했고, 이를 형식에 담아내기 시작했다. 형식에는 크게 두 가지가 존재했다. 하나는 복잡하게 분화하거나 확장되는 형식이었고, 다른 하나는 반복적인 형식, 순환하는 형식이었다. 전자가 기악적 가능성을 극대화하는 것이라면 후자는 노래와의 닮음을 추구하려는 것이었다. 곧 기악의 능력을 한껏 떨치면서도 본원적인 노래다움을 재현하려는 것은 영영 서양 음악의 중요한 지향점으로 남게 되었다. 노래를 지향한다. 이 고귀한 단순성은 클래식 음악의 역사에 흔적을 남겼다. 서양 음악의 대가들은 예외 없이 노래를 작곡했다. 특히 독일어권의 대가들은 평생 많은 수의 리트를 쓰면서 자신과 자기 예술을 되돌아 보았다. 때로는 기악음악 자체를 노래에 빗대 쓰기도 했다. 멘델스존의 〈무언가〉나 리스트의 리트 편곡 작품들이 그러한 사례다. 이 모든 작품들은 연주 기술이 아무리 발전하더라도 그 본질은 소리와 뜻을 하나로 모으는 노래에 있음을 기억하려는 의식의 표현이었다. 이번 음반에서 첼로로 연주되는 9개의 리트들도 마찬가지다. 첼로는 슈베르트와 브람스의 원곡 가사를 전달할 수는 없지만, 여전히 노래다움을 그 이상으로 삼는다. 슈베르트의 세 개의 리트는 모두 정갈하고 단순한 반복적 형식을 취하고 있다. 잿빛 시간에 아름다운 순간을 부여하는 「음악에게」나 추모의 정을 전달하는 「만령절 연도가」, 그리고 명랑한 「송어」 모두 악상을 발전시키기 보다는 하나의 정서 안에 머무르고자 한다. |
