Kind Of Poison (K.O.P.)

보컬 마크 최 (Downhell , Markros Inc , Night People), 기타리스트 태지윤 (Party Maker) 베이시스트 서현민 (스핑크스) , 드러머 박성준 (시나 쓰는 앨리스 , Kickstart) 으로 구성된 4인조 밴드 K.O.P.는 각자의 음악적 배경이 다르다. 헤비메탈과 하드록에서 시작해, 시대가 외면한 장르를 자신들의 언어로 되살려낸다. 유행을 좇지 않고, 시대를 역행하듯 거칠고 어두운 사운드로 돌아온 그들의 음악은 오히려 지금에 더 강렬하게 와닿는다.

신보 『Kind Of Poison』 은 중독과 어둠을 주제로 한 일관된 정서를 유지한다. 첫 트랙 〈자각몽(Lucid Dream)〉은 느리고 무거운 기타 리프 위로 흐르는 낮은 목소리로 앨범의 색을 단번에 규정한다. 이어지는 〈Idiot ID〉는 반복되는 리프의 몽환적 중독성을 통해 얼터너티브 록 특유의 긴장감을 극대화한다. 후반부 〈I Know〉는 감정의 폭발과 절제 사이를 오가며, 밴드의 완성된 구성력을 보여준다. 그리고 〈흘러가지 흘러가〉는 한국어 가사의 리듬과 타령처럼 들리는 멜로디가 어우러져 K.O.P.만의 독창적 감성을 만들어낸다.

앨범의 프로덕션은 의도적으로 ‘거칠고 생생하게’ 유지된다. 윤기 있는 정제 대신, 연주실의 공기와 진동까지 담아낸 듯한 질감. 그 속에서 마크 최의 목소리는 주술처럼 울리고, 태지윤의 기타는 묵직하게 시간의 층을 깎아낸다. K.O.P.는 “새로울 것은 없지만, 그게 오히려 새롭다”고 말한다. 지금 이 시대에 얼터너티브 록을 한다는 사실 그 자체가 이미 대안적이기 때문이다.

『Kind Of Poison』은 단순한 장르 복원이 아니다. 그것은 유행의 흐름과 상관없이 ‘좋은 음악은 시대를 초월한다’는 믿음의 증거다.

모두가 “그런지는 죽었다”고 말할 때, K.O.P.는 여전히 그 불길 속에서 연주하고 있다.
