Love Theme From Spartacus 양준호가 그리는 빌 에반스의 초상 한국의 빌 에반스 양준호 재즈 피아니스트 양준호는 재즈 피아니스트를 업(業)으로 선택한지 어느덧 20년 가까운 시간을 쌓아 온, 중견의 한국 재즈 지킴이이다. 대학에서 클래식을 전공한 그는 1990년대 초반부터 재즈에 입문했고, 1990년대 중반에는 힙합 그룹 ‘듀스’의 앨범 세션을 비롯해서 잘 나가는 세션맨으로도 이름을 떨쳤다. 이정식, 장응규, 김희현과 함께 당대의 슈퍼 밴드였던 서울 재즈 쿼텟의 일원으로 활동했다. 1998년 박용규, 이순용, 이도헌과 한국 재즈의 신선한 기류를 이끌었던 ‘더 쿼텟(The Quartet)을 조직하기까지 그는 한국 재즈의 가장 성실하고, 유망한 재즈 피아니스트로 평가받았다. 더 쿼텟이 멤버들의 유학으로 해체된 이후에도 그는 라틴 재즈 그룹 코바나의 음악 감독으로 활동하는 한편, 이주한, 이정식, 박성연 등과 함께 다채로운 활동을 이어나갔다. 2000년대에는 베이시스트 김호철, 드러머 이창훈과 함께 양준호 트리오로 꾸준한 활동을 펼쳐왔다. 그의 피아니즘은 섬세하고, 예쁘고, 선이 고운 멜로디 라인을 구사하는 한편, 강렬하고 다채로운 리듬의 구사에도 능하다. 현대적인 감각과 음악적 접근을 추구하면서도, 이를 굳이 어렵게 풀어내려 하지 않는, 온유와 친근이 그의 매력이기도 하다. 조곤 조곤 말을 이어가듯 기승전결이 분명한 어법이 그의 피아노에는 언제나 서려 있었다. 그러나 양준호는 어찌 보면 유난히 앨범 운이 없는 아티스트이기도 했다. 본 앨범은 양준호가 재즈에 발을 디딘지 근 20년만에 처음으로 자신의 이름으로 발표한 첫 번째 앨범이다. 2000년에 발표된 더 쿼텟의 첫 앨범 "First Morning" 이후 8년만의 신작이기도 하다. 지난 십여년간 한국 재즈의 얇고 좁은 지형에서 늘 중심에서 활동했던 그였지만, 그는 이렇게 자신의 존재와 음악을 피력하는 것에는 소극적이었다. 양준호는 성실한 음악가이다. 재즈를 선택한 후 단 한번도 활동을 중단하지도 않았고, 무대를 버린 적이 없었다. 지난 10년동안 경희대, 동덕여대, 서울예대, 수원여대 등 여러 대학의 실용 음악과에서 재즈 피아노를 강의해 온 그에게 많은 앨범 제작 제의가 있었지만, 그때마다 “아직 준비가 되지 않았다”라는 응답으로 일관했다. 그만큼이나 양준호는 자신의 앨범 작업은 신중하고 치열한 사전 검열이 있었다. 양준호와 빌 에반스의 대화 양준호가 자신의 첫 번째 리더작의 대상으로 선택한 이는 빌 에반스이다. “빌 에반스는 빌 에반스였다”. 모던 재즈의 보고(寶庫) 리버사이드 레이블의 프로듀서이자 저명한 평론가였던 오린 킵뉴스의 평가처럼 빌 에반스는 어느 누구와도 비교할 수 없을 만큼, 고유한 스타일을 구축했던 모던 재즈 피아노의 거인이다. 때문에 빌 에반스에게로 헌정하고, 그의 작품을 대상화하는 것은 거대한 모험이자 부담이다. 2000년대부터 레귤러 트리오로 활동하고 있는 양준호-김호철-이창훈 트리오는 감히(?) 빌 에반스 트리오의 명성에 도전(?)하고 있다. 양준호 트리오는 재즈 피아노 트리오의 이상형을 제시한 전설에 존경을 바치는 한편, 빌 에반스 트리오가 완성한 음악적 완벽함에 그들만의 해석과 접근으로 빌 에반스의 초상을 그리고 있다. 빌 에반스 음악의 전기, 중기, 후기의 연대기를 폭넓게 투사하고 있으며, 피아노 트리오 편성을 근간으로 피아노 솔로와 듀오의 접근도 함께 한다. 보태어 양준호는 빌 에반스의 음악을 모티브로 한 세 곡의 자작곡으로 새로운 각도에서 빌 에반스를 조망하는 것을 놓치지 않는다. 빌 에반스 만큼이나 투명하고 예쁜 피아노 라인, 그러나 현대적이고 동적인 피아노 프레이즈. 그래서 섬세하고 내적인 인터플레이를 추구하는 트리오의 하모니는 그래서 빌 에반스 트리오와 닮은 듯 다르게 묘사되고 있다. 단 이틀의 레코딩이었지만, 세 명의 연주자는 빌 에반스 트리오의 모방이 아닌, 빌 에반스 트리오를 통한 양준호 트리오의 발견을 신중하게, 또한 열렬히 모색하고 있다. 앨범의 자켓에는 양준호가 직접 찍은 사진들로 가득하다. 이는 그가 바라보는 세계관이다. 그가 피아노를 연주하며 세상을 이야기 하듯, 그는 한가한 주말에 카메라 렌즈를 빌어 세상의 정경들을 포착했다. 재즈 피아니스트 양준호가 오랜 시간의 정성으로 그려낸 빌 에반스의 초상, 양준호 트리오가 빚어낸 은은하면서도 치밀한 재즈 피아노 트리오의 하모니. 2008년, 우리는 양준호와 그의 트리오가 피어낸 아름다운 재즈의 초상과 마주하고 있다. *뮤지션* Yang Joon Ho 양준호(piano) Kim Ho Choul 김호철(contra bass) Lee Chang Hoon 이창훈(drums) |
